CBS bumps Extant

Can Halle Berry defy ratings gravity?

2014-07-07_2218While schedule moves are par for the course in Australia, they are a considerably rarer in the US (ie. not every second day).

So when they happen you can bet it means a lot more.

CBS is moving Extant from a 9pm to 10pm start. In the US 10pm is not considered as out there as it is in Australia, and it has been good for Under the Dome.

But it comes after just 3 weeks for the Halle Berry sci-fi. In its place are Criminal Mind repeats.

Hollywood Reporter notes “after a strong debut with total viewers (9.6 million) and a relatively soft showing with adults 18-49 (a 1.6 rating), its latest episode clocked just a 1.1 rating in the key demo and 6.5 million viewers. That’s roughly half of Big Brother‘s rating.”

In Australia Extant began at 614,000 viewers then 556,000 and 507,000 overnight viewers on TEN. But it has done well with Consolidated viewers with another 142,000 for its second episode.

I’ve stuck with three episodes so far and am struggling to stay alert. All the family stuff is a bit of a dirge and I wish there was more going on in space where the story possibilities are more subject to fantasy. But that would also require other characters.

May not be able to defy gravity much longer…

  1. I’m staying in it for the long haul, there is a bigger mystery here. One good piece of news is they have shot the final episode of the season so if it does crash and burn like an old Russian satellite it’s good to know its likely to turn up in some fashion for fans who stick with it.

  2. After the success of Under The Dome they attempted to a more serious SF show with better production values. But the writing is poor and it is boring.

The Robot Boy is one of Spielberg’s obsessions, see AI.

  3. I’m suprised, because a 1.1 rating is good for a scripted summer show in the US. I doubt Crimimal Minds repeats will do much better.

@Josh777 Channel 9 doesn’t have much on after 8.30, so I wouldn’t be suprised if they air BB at 8.30 “after The Block” for the first few weeks. Doubt it would be viable for Nine to air over summer, but they could push it back to 2015 if they run out of time.

  4. I’ve stuck with it as well so far, but that might be because 9 moved House Husbands to Monday.

I can see what the show is trying to do (with the robot child storyline), but it’s meshing a little uncomfortably with the sci-fi/mystery side of things right now.

  5. That’s not a good sign – especially seems though it’s US Summer ratings season so there is even less reason for the show to be a hit. I have enjoyed it but agree that it is rather slow and not as sci-fi as the promos made out. But speaking of Big Brother, where is Big Brother Australia? With it promised for the second half of this year and The Block still having 2.5 months to fill, is it possible that we could see our first season of Summer BB? I know plenty of us have been begging for Aussie networks to air new quality content over Summer non-ratings for years but this is the first sign I’ve seen that it could actually happen.
