Do Binge viewers watch ads too?

Research data in the US suggests that viewers are willing to tolerate ads under the right circumstances.

Smart-TV-RemoteHow many Binge viewers are watching ads?

Research data published by Wall Street Journal shows that 58% of US binge viewers enjoy watching at least three episodes of a show in one sitting because they don’t have to watch ads.

But the study also found that viewers are willing to tolerate ads under the right circumstances. More than a third said they wouldn’t mind seeing ads while binge-viewing if it lowered their subscription rate and over a third even said ads provide ‘a nice break’ during binge-viewing.

“Many consumers understand that there is a value equation, so if they’re getting to watch on their own terms, they have to sit through ads,” said Annalect’s U.S. research director Jed Meyer. “Live TV is ad-supported and people do watch ads. The good ads cut through the clutter.”

While the trend in Australia is to view early programming Live, and Timeshifting is stronger after 9pm, the US research showed two-thirds of TV viewers binge-view frequently, mostly during prime time.

TV Tonight will soon be launching the annual Audience Inventory to gauge your viewing habits.

  1. I binge-streamed GoT S4 over the weekend when the Foxtel lockup finished – no way I would have tolerated ads in that.

I don’t mind paying for individual shows and/or series like that, but I sure don’t want ads in them as well. Either pay for it via ads or let us pay for it directly with no ads, but don’t attempt to combine the two. That way lies piracy.

  2. I record or time-shift almost every program I watch these days and skip the ads every time. I do occasionally stop to watch 1 or 2 ads if I find them interesting/funny.

I have even started time shifting some sports to save time but that is risky as anyone can tell you the score and ruin your night.

  3. If I’m binge viewing shows via I don’t know Netflix I definitely don’t want any ads during the content of the episode. If netflix were to say have a minute or two of ads between episodes it may not be so bad. I’d tolerate it.
Hulu Plus has way too many ads for a paid service – they need to be very limited IMO there is only so much we will tolerate.

  4. I don’t mind the ads on Hulu Plus, for example.

Because they’re shorter, I’ll typically actually sit and wait for the ads to pass. So I probably know more about financial offerings from Chase, new deals from Time Warner Cable and the new menu at Olive Garden then I do about any commercials running on FTA at the moment.
