Glee trimmed to 13 eps for final season

Glee sensibly decides to wrap things up with 13 -not 22- episodes.

2014-07-11_1300This makes complete sense….

FOX has opted to trim the final sixth season of Glee from 22 episodes to 13, in order to wrap things up.

The decision follows series lows for its fifth season, after a two-season renewal a year ago. While the show was progressive and addictive in its early season -and a big revenue spinner- dramatically, it has followed the trajectory of many in the genre.

The Hollywood Reporter notes co-creator Ryan Murphy recently sat down with the network and studio 20th Century Fox Television to discuss the best way to end the series.

Murphy recently said of the series, “The final season is really its own story and its own location and while the New York stuff will be alive, the final season is not New York-centric at all.

“It really [will be] a lovely, fitting season that…dwells on the original people that were on the show and what happens to them and how they give back. That really is the last season.… We’ll revisit some of the new kids that came and went. There’s a return of the Jane Lynch-Matt Morrison characters in a big way. It’s a really interesting, very sweet, satisfying ending to the story.”

I have faith this will go out with a big with plenty of sentiment and emotion.

Glee will return midseason as part of FOX’s 2015 lineup, but no Aussie date just yet.

  1. Glee was once my favourite show, but after the 3rd season it hass never quite been the same. It still has a warm place in my heart and i have continued to watch every new episode that has come out but it has lost it’s shine. It still has it’s moments of brilliance from time to time but new characters (aka. the new kids at mckinley) never added anything to the show and some of the storylines seem to repeat themselves or go into strange territory. The original characters will always be my favourite and Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch will forever be remembered for the iconic roles, the roles that in my opinion really made the show. I just hope ELEVEN decides to fast track this for us in the new year like they did with the previous seasons.

  2. Agree with previous comments, the show didn’t renew itself, keeping the original characters hanging around whilst trying to introduce new blood was a big mistake. It has gone from being a fun show of enjoyable mashups to become more of a musical sandwiched into 45 minute instalments.

The New York/WMHS story lines dragged on for too long, introducing Demi Lovato and Adam Lambert appeared to give some promise, then after the 100 episode they dropped all these new characters with no notice and moved back to the original cast.

    Let’s hope this wraps nicely…

  3. You are so right about it going the way of all series of that genre., It should never have gone past three seasons, after that it was just time to bale. Will have a look at the last 13 and see if Ryan Murphy can ciontrol himself to not let it go over the top which really killed the series quite some time ago. The smartest thing they can do for the final 13 is keep Lea Michelle’s appearances to a minimum
. She has been so over exposed and her character seems to have meshed into the real person and every time I see a picture of her now I want to start tearing something up. I think Glee made her a star and then killed that star stone dead.

  4. The big mistake was how afraid the show was to move forward. They should have just gone for a Skins style reboot after most the cast “left” Glee club in season 3 and concentrated on the new cast, who just never had a chance while the old folk lingered around.

  5. Considering the atrocious ratings of the fifth season finale in the U.S. (a series low of 1.87 million), I really couldn’t see FOX allowing this dead horse to carry on for the 24 episodes that the producers were originally intent on making.

Glee really should have been a 13 episode season show from the start. There really is far too much filler padding out much of each season.

  6. Good move. I am finding now these days 22 episodes per season is too long and drags out the story.

I preferred the New York storyline, the high school seems over with.

  7. So glad they came to their senses. 22 episodes would have been torture.
I am still watching though the last season was really up and down in a big way.
I think 13 episodes is too much, I think Season 6 is too much, it definitely should have ended at the end of Season 5…. but thankfully at least they’ve agreed to cut the season down.
