Memo to will.i.am: Anja Nissen signed to Universal

will.i.am offers Anja Nissen a record contract, but overlooks that she already wins a deal with Universal.

2014-07-22_0933It was a rather odd moment last night during The Voice finale when will.i.am announced he would sign Anja Nissen to his label, will.i.am. music group.

After all the prize for the show’s winner has always included a deal with Universal Music Group. Her prize also includes $100,000 a shiny new car.

So was the coach so swept up in the moment that he forgot the format of the show?

Thankfully, there is a happy medium, given that will.i.am music group is also part of Universal itself.

A Shine spokesperson said, “Will and his label are part of the Universal family and we understand Will has already started producing songs with Anja and also understand Universal are looking forward (to) delivering them to the world.”

But for the umm, record, Anja Nissen is indeed signed to Universal.

  1. Like past winners, she’ll disappear into obscurity and we’ll all wonder where she ended up. And then, one day, there will be a poster wrapped around a telegraph pole advertising her guest performance at an RSL.

  2. Yeah I thought this was odd last night but then discovered it’s basically all under Universal.

I guess will.i.am wants her on his label instead of her being signed to Mercury Records like all the other Voice contestants are.
