Renewed: Sherlock

It's official. Sherlock will return with a Special followed by three new episodes.

2014-01-27_0109Hurrah! The BBC has announced Sherlock will indeed return, with a Special followed by a series of three new episodes.

Co-creator, writer and executive producer Steven Moffat says: “A special, plus a new series of three episodes – it’s a record-breaking run! Of course, it’s far too early to say what’s coming, but we’re reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you’d expect…”

Fellow co-creator, writer and executive producer Mark Gatiss, adds: “Series Four! At last! It’s always special to return to Sherlock but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a Special! Not only THAT, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on – again!”

Locking in all members of the team had been likened to jigsaw puzzle, with Martin Freeman having recently appeared in Fargo and both actors on The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Sue Vertue, Executive Producer, Hartswood Films says: “It’s taken a little while to get the dates sorted as none of the boys are exactly sitting back twiddling their thumbs but there was unanimous goodwill to make this work, so we’re thrilled that 221b is going to be inhabited again.”

Quite what form the Special will take isn’t yet clear but shooting will begin in January, with the series shooting later next year.

  1. I have to agree with most of the other comments. Season 3 was just a complete waste of my viewing time.
Frankly, I think Elementary is so much better.

  2. The Hobbit wouldn’t have been causing too many problems. Shooting for the first two films finished July 2012. The 3rd film is mostly made up of stuff that didn’t fit in first two, although they did some more shooting in May 2013 to pad out the last two.

I don’t think Moffat and Gatiss have time to run both Doctor Who and Sherlock. They are the only popular shows the BBC has though.

Season 3 was like a self parody. There was some good writing in The Sign of The Three but the rest of it was forgettable.

  3. Yipee! Thank you very much for this good news. I do hope they concentrate on good adventures rather than excessive navel-gazing on the characters.

That said I hope Nine will replay the first three series if they have the rights on GEM before the show is played (one a week) to remind viewers of how good it is. Maybe play the first Downey film on GO! to promote it showing up to the Sherlock Holmes fans. Plus use the second film to promote the new series showing up to them as well.

If the BBC end up playing it in a January. Then they could play it, the repeats too or most of it in the non-ratings period. That way it could make fans happy they fast-tracked it. Plus it might cause the least possible harm. Because I really don’t want the latter. I’d be grateful if it is possible.

  4. After seeing Benedict Cumberbatch in the Star Trek film, I’d thought he’d be good as Sherlock. I eagerally awaited for my first outing with him on season 3 but it was the most drawn out, boring and repeatative program I have ever witnessed. Not clever remotely, just dull.

  5. As you could tell from my account name I was a mega Sherlock fan. But I agree with Tatiana, season 3 lost me with the focus on character and not sharp fast plots and witty dialogue.

  6. Sorry but the show went downhill when they stopped focusing on the cases and made it more “character driven”. Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories were always about the cases first, then the characters. They tried to lighten things up with humour and it fell flat. It all became very silly. Episode 1 of series 3 was a dogs breakfast. All we wanted to know was how Sherlock survived but all they left us with were stupid possibilities. It was such a disappointment to see a great show become a farce.

  7. Yeah, whatever…. Series 1 was fantastic. Series 2 was mediocre. Series 3 was a total shocker. I won’t be wasting my time with Series 4 unless I hear they’ve changed the format.
