Returning: The Helpmann Awards

Jonathan Biggins hosts the Helpmann Awards at the Capital Theatre on Arena.

2014-07-16_1300Arena will broadcast the 14th Annual Helpmann Awards hosted by Jonathan Biggins at the Capital Theatre, Sydney.

“After a huge year on stage around Australia, this year’s Awards will be a spectacular star studded event featuring some of the most iconic musicals of all time, showcasing a varied range of talented local performers.”

Spanning musical theatre, comedy, opera, classical musical, theatre and dance, The Helpmann Awards recognise achievement and excellence in Australia’s vibrant live performance industry. Strictly Ballroom The Musical and The King And I have both been nominated and celebrated in the popular musical theatre categories, as well as the Sydney production Sweet Charity, awarded with eight nominations including ‘Best Musical’. Also nominated for ‘Best Musical’ is the Rocky Horror Show.

The awards will also feature spectacular live performances and an array of Australia’s biggest stars. Opening the show will be the full version of the Circle of Life from Disney’s The Lion King featuring the stunning parade of animals -a world-first for an award ceremony. The ceremony will also include a very special performance from Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed new production of Les Misérables. As well as a dazzling performance from Strictly Ballroom The Musical and a very special medley from The King And I starring Lisa McCune and Jason Scott Lee.
