Bob Hastings, best known as the bumbling aide to McHale's Navy Captain Binghampton, has died.

2014-07-04_0153Bob Hastings, best known as the bumbling aide to McHale’s Navy Captain Binghampton, has died, aged 89.

Hastings (pictured, left), who appeared on the comedy as Lt. Elroy Carpenter from 1962- 1966, died of pancreatic cancer. He also appeared in the two features spun off from the series in 1964 and 1965.

Hastings also recurred on All in the Family as Tommy Kelsey, the owner of the bar that Archie Bunker frequents and later buys.

He had a long list of television credits including Captain Video and His Video Rangers, The Phil Silvers Show, Gunsmoke, Ben Casey, Dennis the Menace, The Twilight Zone, The Munsters, The New Adventures of Superman, Hogan’s Heroes, I Dream of Jeannie, The Flying Nun, Green Acres, Adam-12, My Three Sons, Room 222, Love American Style, The Odd Couple, Marcus Welby M.D., Ironside, The Rockford Files, The Love Boat, Quincy, M.E. and a number of Batman-related series, including Batman: The Animated Series, for which he was the voice of Commissioner Gordon.

Feature films included The Bamboo Saucer, Angel in My Pocket, The Love God?, The Boatniks, How to Frame a Figg, and The Poseidon Adventure.

    “Am I the only person who thinks that Steve Higgins (Jimmy Fallon show) looks like Captain Binghamton?”

  2. You seem to have forgotten his longest running role. He played Bob Hughes on As the World Turns from October 1960 until the show’s final airing on September 17, 2010.
