Letterman’s tribute to Robin Williams

Video: "I am sorry I, like everybody else, had no idea that the man was in pain and the man was suffering."

2014-08-20_0018David Letterman has given a lengthy 10 minute tribute to Robin Williams, who appeared on his show 50 times.

Letterman shares his story of meeting Williams 38 years ago at the Comedy Store as young comedians.

Watching Williams improvise his entire act was so profound, it left the other joke-based comedians speechless.

“I thought they’re going to have to put an end to show business because what can happen after this?” he recalled.

“We didn’t approach him because we were afraid of him. Honest to God. Holy crap. There goes my chance at show business.”

But a young Letterman went on to enjoy a fleeting appearance on Mork and Mindy.

“What I will add here is beyond being a very talented man and a good friend and a gentlemen, I am sorry I, like everybody else, had no idea that the man was in pain and the man was suffering.”

  1. Made a point to watch Letterman last night as I knew he was back from holidays and that he was close to Robin. Amazing tribute. Nobody does this kind of stuff better than Dave. Not sure if its in this clip, but at the end of the show, after saying goodbye to everyone watching, he also said goodnight to Robin.

    Class act is Letterman.
