NZ to produce Outrageous Fortune prequel

New Zealand's criminal West clan is making a comeback, this time in the 1970s.

2014-08-02_0031Hit New Zealand dramedy Outrageous Fortune is set to have a prequel.

The series about the West family, which featured Robyn Malcolm and Grant Bowler, ran for 5 seasons from 2005 – 2010 and aired in Australia on TEN.

The six-part prequel has the working title West Side Story, will commence production in October.

The series will be set in the 1970s against a backdrop of real-life historical events and will tell the story of legendary safe cracker and career criminal Ted West (originally played by Frank Whitten), his wife Rita and their son Wolfgang.

TV3 Head of Commissioning and External Production Sue Woodfield said, “Outrageous Fortune provided some of the best moments on New Zealand television and we’re sure our viewers will be as excited as we are about this project.”

US and UK adaptations were also attempted but had short runs.

Casting is yet to be announced.
