Oops. Only on Nine? “Surely you wouldn’t tell a fib, Pete?”

Sandra Sully & Hugh Riminton gently let Peter Overton know a Nine News scoop aired an hour earlier on TEN.

2014-08-27_0045It was very nearly news presenters at ten paces yesterday after a tweet by Nine’s Peter Overton raised eyebrows over at TEN.

Overton had tweeted on an upcoming story about a quick-thinking young pilot being hailed as a hero for landing a light aircraft after fighting off a passenger who tried to grab the controls.

Nine had claimed audio of his mayday call could be heard “only on Nine News.”

But TEN’s Sandra Sully took issue with that point, replying that the audio “must sound just like the one we will air on #TenNews at 5” -a whole hour earlier.

TEN’s Hugh Riminton weighed into the debate with his former colleague. “Surely you wouldn’t tell a fib, Pete..?” he asked.

But before it descended into a flaming war, Overton conceded it was an “honest mistake” which Sully and Riminton cheerfully accepted.

Other Twitter users pointed out the audio had also been heard on radio yesterday.

  1. When ever any of them claim ‘first on…’ I always take it with a pinch of salt, also the ‘Only on…’ 9 & 7 splash over the screen with some stories, I just turn to the next channel.

  2. Peter Overton happens to be one of the nicest people I’ve encountered, and his response is commensurate with how very professional he is. Though, this “first on/only on/exclusive” rubbish is nauseating.

  3. On a side note, I think Ten need to go back to the “Ten News” branding and forget the retro “eyewitness news” brand. All their newreaders and viewers say amd tweet “Ten News” so don’t confuse the issue.
