Returning: Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire is back for its fifth and final season next month, screening Express from the US, Mondays from September 8 at 5.30pm on Showcase.

Even Prohibition had to end. Returning for its fifth and final season, Boardwalk Empire will jump forward 7 years for its final episodes. It’s 1931, the Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone. When we last saw Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and the rest of the gang, Atlantic City had been turned upside down; Nucky was eager to throw in the towel, Eli Thompson had been cooperating with the FBI, the battle for control of Chicago had turned into all-out war, and Chalky White retreated to Maryland to mourn his daughter and pick up the pieces of his business that’d been left in tatters. Seven years is a long time to allow that dust to settle, and the Depression Era w as a very different one from the Roaring Twenties. If history is any indication of what’s to come, there may be even more turmoil in 1931 than there was in 1924.
