Seven signs with SANFL for 2 more years

Seven Adelaide will screen the SANFL for at least until the end of the 2016 season, following bumper numbers.

2014-08-28_2352Seven Adelaide will screen the SANFL for at least until the end of the 2016 season following a deal with the SANFL and McGuire Media.

Seven’s Adelaide general manager Tony Davison, SANFL president John Olsen and general manager Leigh Whicker and McGuire Media CEO Cos Cardone finalised the agreement at Seven’s Hindmarsh studios this week.

Seven’s ratings for SANFL have almost doubled on the 2013 season, with a record match average of 31,364 viewers – an 87% increase on the average of 16,801 that were viewing on the ABC.

The previous best season average was 27,200 in 2002.

The first SANFL Showdown between Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows in Round 5 averaged 64,042 viewers to become not only the highest rating match of the season but also the most watched home and away fixture since 2001.

The opening round match under lights between Norwood and Port Adelaide was the second highest of the season with 54,884 viewers, followed by Port Adelaide v Adelaide (Round 14) 53,245 and the Good Friday fixture between South Adelaide and Glenelg drew 53,003 viewers.

Seven will break new ground this week with live coverage on Saturday of an historic SANFL Finals double header at Adelaide Oval.

Traditional rivals Norwood and Sturt clash in the Qualifying Final at 4.30pm and South Adelaide and the Eagles battle in the Elimination Final at 7.30pm.

Both matches in the SANFL IGA League Finals Series will be shown Liveon 7mate.

It is the first time the SANFL Finals have been telecast in a twilight and evening format and Saturday’s double header marks the return of SANFL Finals footy to SEVEN since 1987.

The First and Second semi-finals in Week 2 will also be played in another double header LIVE on 7mate with telecast details still to be finalised.

  1. I hear the ABC won`t be renewing the WAFL tv contract due to budget pressures and costs associated with broadcasting the WAFL matches across WA. Now that the Eagles and Dockers are aligned with East Perth and Peel Thunder respectively, Seven may be interested in taking over state footy broadcasts in the West.

I am sure they would look at the VFL for Victorian and NSW Southern Riverina viewers in future if the ABC stop covering that competition too.
