Survivor production crew strike in US

It's Outwit, Outlast, Outplay and everybody out at Survivor.

2014-05-21_2240It’s Outwit, Outlast, Outplay and everybody out at Survivor, with news that crew are on strike.

Problems began with Editors but have now extended to the postproduction crew.

A day after the Motion Picture Editors Guild notified Mark Burnett Island Post Productions that its editors wanted a union contract, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has tweeted, “The post crew of CBS’ #Survivor has walked off the job, halting post for an IATSE contract.”

The dispute is over pursuit of an agreement that includes industry-standard health insurance and pension benefits matching what fellow Burnett unscripted series Shark Tank and NBC’s The Voice have on their IATSE contracted shows.

“People stayed on the job yesterday out of respect for the long relationship with the show, but respect has to go both ways,” a source told Deadline.

“This wildly successful program has helped to define the genre of reality television, and editors play a critical role in shaping the show,” Motion Picture Editors Guild president Alan Heim told Hollywood Reporter. “They seek the same health benefits, pensions and basic protections that their counterparts elsewhere in the industry have long enjoyed. After 28 successful seasons and 16 Emmy nominations, that doesn’t seem too much to ask.”

Update: “Contract talks have been scheduled for Friday. In the meantime, our strike action has been suspended, and Survivor post-production employees will return to their jobs on Thursday,” the Guild announced on Facebook. “Our picket line will stand down until further notice. Please do not report for picket duty tomorrow. Kudos to the crew of Survivor for their resolve they showed today and this important victory.”

  1. Was watching Robin Williams’ License To Wed on GO last night, and they were advertising the new season of Survivor as “coming soon”. No start date but enough to get me excited for my favourite show.
Even after all these years it remains awesome television. And indeed successful television. If the big wigs like Burnett are making millions off this show, then the guys who do the hard yards in lesser jobs also deserve to benefit. I hope these guys get what they want.

  2. Huh? After 28 seasons they just now want a union contract.

And didn’t these non-union workers realise Mark Burnett is a deeply religious rightwing conservative supporter of the GOP.

You know the political party that wants to abolish all unions?

I just can’t believe it has taken these workers 14 years to question their workplace contracts and conditions.

The next season should be interesting. I wonder how many of the rightwing conservative contestants will comment publically about the strike by leftwing union thugs.

I am betting Elisabeth Hasselbeck -former Survivor contestant and now Fox News host – will have a few words about this.

Shame I don’t waste my money on Foxtel so I won’t get to enjoy her comments.

  3. Being currently involved in union negotiations for a new EBA in my workplace, I can empathise with this totally. I’m a Survivor fan and am in awe of the work the editors do to cut out gripping episodes out of so much material.
