2014-08-07_0058Next week SBS 2 series The Feed those who struggle to fit within societal norms, dwell on the fringes and challenge the conventional.

From the elderly dying alone and unnoticed, to those escaping the rat race and starting up a commune; from young monarchists to odd strippers, The Feed is calling this its ‘Outsiders’ week.

A Silent World – Julia Gilchrist is 30 years old, bright, attractive and driven but despite being more than qualified she has been turned down for 200 jobs. Why? Julia was born profoundly deaf. She now has two cochlear implants, can lip read and speaks well but when it comes to important details she needs things written down. Many employers lack the understanding and compassion that is needed to accommodate Julia.

Escape to the commune – The Feed follows the journey of 12 Sydney siders who have had enough of the rat race and want to start their own society outside of society. Their dream is to live completely sustainably without any need for money.

Dying Alone – Who was 89-year-old Vlasta Berka? She died alone in her Auburn house and nobody found her for six months. Deaths like these are sharply rising. The Feed’s Andy Park investigates her life through her beautiful diaries and joins the forensic cleaner whose job it is to mop up these lonely deaths.

Adelaide’s Picasso – They call him Jungle and his paintings can be seen all over the streets of Adelaide. Schizophrenic Adelaide painter Jungle Phillips has lived a tough life. He was sexually abused by his father and saw his brother shoot himself though the face. Depressed and battling addiction Jungle turned to art as a form of therapy. His eccentric house and art has become recognised as “outsider art”.

Young Monarchists – The Feed meets the youth branch of the Australian Monarchists League. They say a growing number of Australians are throwing their support behind the royal family. They also have a lot of royal memorabilia.

Not Your Usual Strippers – Dwarfs and fattograms are just some of the options that this Newcastle based stripper’s service offers. The Feed’s Jeannette Francis meets some of their most interesting and odd talent.

Food is so last century – Soylent, is a powdered protein product that gives people the nutrients of food – it’s cheap, it’s easy and it has minimal impact on the environment. The Feed’s meets three Australians who are living off it and nothing else.
