Water bottle ban on Downton Abbey set

After 'bottle-gate,' all things contemporary are now banned from the Downton Abbey set.

2014-08-22_1501After that Downton Abbey photo went viral, producers have now banned water bottles from the show’s set.

In fact they’ve banned everything that’s contemporary (does that include TV cameras?).

The empty mineral water sitting behind Hugh Bonneville and Laura Carmichael garnered all manner of news coverage. So much so that the cast later turned it into a positive, by posing for international charity WaterAid (decidedly out of costume!).

A cast source told the Telegraph, “Modern watches and jewellery are out and so even is modern underwear as the danger is apparently too great it could be seen if we bend over.

“They have relented in the case of prescription glasses and asthma guns, but that’s about it.”

There have previously been photos of cast relaxing in costume off set with modern devices, I guess that’s out now too.

Creator Julian Fellowes says he is unaware of the ban, but imagined that there would be reprisals for the individual who was responsible for leaving the bottle of mineral water in the now notorious shot.

“It was a silly mistake, of course, and I suppose someone will be blown up for it, but if the cast can turn it around and actually help to raise some money for such a terrific cause, then I’m glad it happened. Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat,” he said.

I’m guessing we will see a water bottle gag at the Emmys next week when the Downton Abbey is introduced for its Drama category.
