Which shows are big in the bush?

Better Homes & Gardens, ANZAC Girls, even Hercules the Human Bear. What's rating with Regional viewers?

2014-08-21_0043What are the shows that are rating with regional viewers? While our TV ratings are traditionally assessed on a 5 city metro figure, where all things are equal, there are also ratings tallied in 6 regional areas. These are collated by Regional TAM and looking at last week’s Overnight numbers, they indicate some shows -and some networks- are more popular in certain areas.

Regional TAM is a joint venture comprising the 5 FTA regional commercial networks – NBN, Prime Television, Seven Queensland, Southern Cross Broadcasting Pty Ltd, and WIN Corporation.

Last week The Block‘s Sunday show was the top rated programme in the 5 city metro at 1.5m viewers. It was also the top show in Northern NSW and regional Victoria. But in regional Queensland and WA it’s a different story.

In regional Queensland Seven News (weeknights) was the top rated show, followed by Thursday Night NRL, X Factor‘s two shows, Seven News Saturday & Sunday, Seven Local News, Home and Away, Friday Night NRL, The Block Sunday, WIN News, Nine News. They also quite liked Bringing Sexy Back, Queenslander Weekend and TEN’s Bledisloe Cup.

Regional NSW is divided into two parts. In Northern NSW they don’t care that The Block is made in Melbourne. They just love the show. It topped their week on Sunday and the weeknight editions were all strong. Nine News (Sun) was next, but the weeknights were also strong. Thursday and Friday Night NRL followed. Elsewhere they quite liked The X Factor, ANZAC Girls, A Current Affair and Bledisloe Cup.

In Southern NSW ANZAC Girls was the top show of the week, followed by The X Factor, The Block (Sun), Nine News (Sun), Better Homes and Gardens and Grand Designs Revisited. But they were also drawn to Thursday and Friday Night NRL, 60 Minutes, Movie: Aladdin and WIN News.

In Regional Victoria The Block (Sun) topped the week, just ahead of WIN News and The Block (Mon), then Nine News, The X Factor Results, House Husbands and The Force. Victorians were also partial to Friday Night AFL, Seven News and Border Security.

Tasmanians chose Seven News as their top show of the week followed by Better Homes and Gardens, The X Factor, Grand Designs Revisited, Home and Away and Friday Night AFL. But they happily tuned into Catalyst, ABC News, New Tricks, The Block and ANZAC Girls.

Regional West Australians are loyal to Seven News, Better Homes and Gardens, The X Factor, Grand Designs Revisited and Home and Away. Other faves included ANZAC Girls, Thursday Night AFL and yes, even Hercules the Human Bear.

  1. I remember when Chris Bath was reading the News on NBN in Newcastle! Ah, the good old days! So pleased to see her success now … well deserved!
(Actually, they were not such good days because we had no way to source the other shows we wanted to watch). 🙁

  2. @BG Yes, that is indeed Southern Cross News not Seven News.

@David Do you have Network breakdowns?
eg Id imagine in Tas that it would be Sth Cross 1, ABC 2, WIN 3, Ten 4, SBS 5.

  3. David,
    Thanks for the insight.
Great to know which regions are enjoying some great content and supporting some good Aussie shows.
Looking at the ABC content 🙂

  4. David, a bit of historical perspective here – As with the city stations, some stations have a legacy of mass viewership of their news services that carry viewers across their entire schedule. Perth’s TVW7 is an example. Nine’s GTV in Melbourne is another. These are powerhouse stations that more or less obliterate the opposition. In the bush, these differences are often even more exaggerated. Newcastle’s NBN-3 has long been the highest-rating news and indeed the highest-rating station in the country (in a competitive market). The people of Northern New South Wales have long been glued to Channel Nine. Even Channel 10 once had some strongholds – in Canberra with TEN Capital and in Townsville/Cairns with TVQ. TEN Capital News used to be the #1 News in Canberra through the 80s and into the 90s. Alas, they basically gave up and now – again thanks primarily to their strength in local news…

  5. Is the figure in Tasmania for Seven News actually the local Southern Cross News? As Seven news isn’t shown in Tasmania (or Nine news for that matter)
