AFL fans will be sorry to hear that commentator Dennis Cometti plans to retire at the end of the 2016 season.
Perth-based Cometti is well-regarded by fans of the game, having had a media 40 years covering both VFL and AFL.
“I’m 65 now and I can’t imagine doing it beyond the current agreement. That’ll be the end for me, I’d say. It’s not the football, it’s the travel. I’ve worked out that I’ve spent five years of my life in a hotel. Age does come into it,” he told News Corp.
Cometti first signed with Seven in 1986 staying until 2001 and re-joined the network in 2007. He has been voted Television Caller of the Year by the Australian Football Media Association on multiple occasions.
He has also commentated on several Olympic broadcasts for Seven.

It would be good if Ray Warren follows Dennis and pull the pin. Ray is long in the tooth and boring as a commentator
i will not be surprised if FOX Footy pick him up and he only does games in Perth. He did that a little bit in 2002 on selected Sunday afternoon games when FOX Footy only had 1 sunday game. Its kind of sad butthesame happend to Peter Landy, Ian Robertson and Lou Richards. I do agree Sandy Roberts though should have never been let go he could have been in the Saturday Arvo slot with either Basil or Hamish or on Saturday Night with BT. Still love his commentry. Well done Dennis Centimetre Perfect Cometti.
Maybe he knows some other Network will take it from Seven ever thought of that, and he will be moving over to that network/s ?
Could we get the Lotto results too?
Good luck to him. I hope we can get new commentators when Channel 7’s AFL Broadcasting Contract expires in 2016.
Good luck to him. While there will be a few detractors, there are far more who like him. It will allow someone else to step up…
Good riddance. couldn’t come quick enough.
legend.
seven should’ve kept sandy and had him as a replacement
Jimbo: “So the final year for him will be 2016.”
That’s the dilemma he faces living in Perth. He cant decide to semi retire and call only Melbourne games, or just do radio. Its either all in, or all out. The repetitive long haul flights would have to take their toll. Good to hear he will be around for a couple more years though, Id heard he was retiring this year or maybe next.
Dennis loves the footy. I remember him following the AFL over to Nine last decade and then returning to Seven when they got the rights back.
The article says he is retiring after this season.
