Belgian series Salamander is the next foreign language drama coming to Wednesday nights on SBS ONE.

The 12-part series premiered in Europe in 2012 and is set for an English remake.

Everyone has secrets; how far will they go to stop them from being exposed?

Following the success of Scandinavian series Borgen, The Bridge and The Killing comes Salamander – a dark political conspiracy woven with blackmail, lies and intrigue and a plot which twists and turns right up to the final episode.

In Brussels, Belgium, the vault of an exclusive private bank is robbed by a slick group of thieves. Sixty-six safes are opened, but curiously no valuables or money are stolen, only personal documents containing the owners’ most intimate secrets, lies and scandals.

These safes belong to the top tier of Belgian society – the political, military, business and judicial elite which make up a secret organisation of powerful players known as Salamander. If their secrets are made public, the repercussions could affect the entire country.

After a tip off, old-school police inspector Paul Gerardi (Filip Peeters) is on the case. As the key players begin to vanish, commit suicide or turn up murdered, he realises this is no simple robbery investigation. Gerardi is soon caught in the middle of the criminals, and the authorities desperate for a cover up. When the stakes are as high as these, Gerardi’s own family, and life, are put in danger.
