Cigarettes are the most lethal consumer product on the planet. Every year over 5 million customers of the tobacco industry die. The product costs taxpayers billions of dollars in health care, as smokers battle illnesses related to their addiction.

In this special edition of Four Corners, running over two nights, award-winning reporter Peter Taylor investigates why thousands of young people around the world are still taking up smoking daily, and how the tobacco companies continue to turn big profits.

We get an insight into how these powerful corporations manipulate smokers and seduce the young, potential victims of the fatal addiction. The film also takes a look at the industry’s fight against increasing regulations, from the banning of smoking in public places, plain packaging and legislation demanding cigarette packets show pictures depicting the horrific impact of smoking on people.

  1. Many years ago in a medical journal I read of a fungus affecting tobacco plants. This fungus produced a toxin known as Aflatoxin which damages the genes which prevent cancer. The fungus can be killed by ammonia fumes.
If tobacco was to be treated by ammonia fumes would it be less lethal?
