Sunrise v Today USA week: so who won?

Ratings: Two weeks, two shows in the USA -but only one winner.

2014-09-12_1010There’s just one more set of numbers to come on Today‘s week in the US but it’s clear it can’t match the numbers that Sunrise pulled during its ‘road tour’ a week earlier.

This week Sunrise has bettered Today simply by staying at its Martin Place base:

Monday: Sunrise 340,000 / Today 305,000
Tuesday: Sunrise 324,000 / Today 290,000
Wednesday: Sunrise 391,000 / Today 326,000
Thursday: Sunrise 374,000 / Today 320,000

If there is a theory that OB locations don’t attract extra viewers, that was also dispelled by Sunrise a week earlier with numbers above 400,000.

Week of Sept 1:
Monday: Sunrise 414,000 / Today 311,000
Tuesday: Sunrise 384,000 / Today 287,000
Wednesday: Sunrise 380,000 / Today 271,000
Thursday: Sunrise 417,000 / Today 260,000
Friday: Sunrise 391,000 / Today 257,000

Thankfully for Nine it’s a different story in primetime, where it’s just won its fifth straight night of the week.

Nine network won with 31.6% then Seven 25.3%, ABC and TEN tied for 17.7% each and SBS lifted to 7.7%.

The Block has topped every night of the week so far, now at 1.28m viewers. Next for Nine was Nine News (1.03m / 980,000), ACA (957,000), Big Brother (881,000), The Footy Show (569,000) and Hot Seat (539,000).

Seven News was 957,000 / 925,000 for Seven then Home and Away (770,000), The Secret Life of Babies (591,000) and Million Dollar Minute (531,000). Movie: Charlie’s Angels was 288,000.

ABC News (771,000) led for ABC then 7:30 (655,000), Silk (615,000), Catalyst (571,000), QI (401,000) and The Dreamhouse (293,000).

The Bachelor was 646,000 for TEN. The Project was 562,000 / 446,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 535,000, and SVU was 464,000 / 380,000.

On SBS ONE it was Heston’s Great British Food was 341,000, Destination Flavour Down Under (292,000), Shane Delia’s Spice Journey Turkey (285,000), Masters of Sex (157,000) and SBS World News (125,000).

ABC2’s Charlie and Lola topped multichannels at 282,000.

  1. Big Brother was almost at its best last night, can’t remember ever seeing so much confrontation and intensity 3 days in. It felt more like day 23. The halfway house of last year doesnt come close to dividing the house as it has already done. More of this instead of silly fluff talk which is ok in small doses.

    1. The cynic in me was a tad concerned that key moments were driven by BB not by the housemates. He was the one who told them to share the news regarding the jackpot money, and then a second time telling Sam to confront Katie now not later. I suspect this is because it had not impacted to maximum effect. Show is better when BB is watching not forcing.

  2. Agree with Mycreations, BB was much better last night. House dynamics and some hangry housemates were good fun to watch and no silly party games. Priya and Katie for permanent heads of house please!

  3. @Rutzie I saw the promo for the Secret Life of Babies during an ad break on Home and Away and I just started pissin meself.

I just couldn’t understand why 7 had resorted to baby programs to fill up the schedule. Considering I hadn’t seen it promoted anywhere else throughout the week I’m surprised that many people tuned in. It still baffles me why they haven’t got anything to fill the Thursday night hole. At least some local programming 7?

  4. Much prefer Sunrise than Today, Sunrise is a fun loving down to earth show which is great, there is enough doom and gloom in the world today and if you can have a laugh about things, you forget what problems the world has for a few moments, Today presenters always seemed stuffed shirts and very, very false especially the guys who think they are great, as if, come down off your high horses, haven’t watch much of Today for quite a while.

  5. Seven’s programming on Thursdays is just bizarre. Movies aren’t working and what the hell is a baby special doing in a primetime slot during the week. No consistency whatsoever.

  6. I am a regular Sunrise viewer but do flick a bit and I think Today did a better job in the USA. I think the reason why Sunrise wins is that the cast connects better with the viewer. They come across as one of us where as the Today cast with the exception of Lisa and Silvia come across as TV people. The men on Today are the problem.

  7. Big contrast in ratings between morning news services and primetime news services. Surely it’s only a matter of time before presenter changes are made to 7 news in Sydney?
