Vince Vaughan joins True Detective

Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell now confirmed for Season 2 of HBO drama.

2014-09-24_1057HBO has officially confirmed Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell for Season 2 of True Detective.

A third female lead role has not been announced.

The synopsis logline is: “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.”

Farrell will play one of the three cops, Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vaughn is the career criminal, Frank Semyon, who in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Taylor Kitsch is also tipped to play a police officer.

Deadline speculates eight actresses have been invited to read for the female lead: Rosario Dawson, Kelly Reilly, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Abigail Spencer, Oona Chaplin, Jaimie Alexander and Brit Marling.

Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes (Cary Joji Fukunaga directed all of S1).

Showcase will fast-track the season in Winter 2015.

  1. A risky casting choice, but one which could pay dividends. If he was playing one of the detectives, I’d be totally against it… But I think he could very much succeed in the criminal role. He’s huge in stature (often underplayed in his movie roles) & can actually look quite menacing at times. The director will obviously need to rein in his goofy side, but it wasn’t an issue with Harrelson, who is not too dissimilar an actor imo.

  2. I was a huge fan of the 1st season of TD. I really thought Woody and Matt did a great job. I had high reservations about Matt doing a good job as I think most of his films are lame but I was pleasantly surprised.

    The Same sentiment is with me for Mr Vaughn, not a fan of his but I hope I am surprised again in a positive way.
