Archie set for Riverdale series

Archie, Betty & Jughead will be brought to life in a live action drama, called Riverdale.

2014-10-25_0046The Archie comic series is set to become a live action drama, Riverdale, under US producer Greg Berlanti.

Warner Bros TV is producing the project with Berlanti Productions for FOX.

Deadline reports the series will be set in the present, as a bold, subversive take, exploring the surreality of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.

The series will showcase the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge and will include the entire cast of characters from the comics — including Reggie Mantle and Jughead Jones. Gay character Kevin Keller also will play a pivotal role, with other characters the Archie series set to appear, including Josie and the Pussycats.

Both The Archies and Josie and the Pussycats have previously featured in their own 60s-based cartoon series.

  1. Sounds great. I used to spend the large part of my pocket money on Archie comics when I was a kid. It probably needs to go dark in it’s take for the 2010s. It would be a little too saccharin for today if left the same

  2. Sounds a bit dark. Wasn’t Archie, more a comedy than a drama? Are they still in a band? I guess they won’t be singing the fabulous Sugar, Sugar, if it’s in modern day.

  3. There was a made for TV movie “Archie:To Riverdale & Back Again ” made in 1990 that took place when the gang was older and had kids of their own.
It was also a pilot for a potential series but nothing ever came of it.
Also don’t forget Sabrina the teenage witch was an Archie spin off and that did better than I ever thought it would!

  4. Would love to see Big Moose, the school jock in the show. When I was a little kid reading the comics he was my favourite and when I started high school I took up weights and sports as a result of his influence.

  5. Love Greg Berlanti, but doesn’t he have enough on his plate with Arrow, The Flash, The Mysteries of Laura and potentially Supergirl? I know he isn’t showrunner for them all, but he produces and writes for them. Hope he’s not stretching himself too thin.

Not sure if this would work as a series, especially a live action series.
