Australia Channel to launch online tomorrow

News anchors including Stan Grant will front the new Australia Channel, beamed to international audiences online.

2012-12-03_1244SKY News has now detailed more of its Australia Channel, streaming to international audiences as a joint venture between Australian News Channel Pty Ltd and Lightning International Ltd.

Available from 1st November 2014, Australia Channel will stream 24/7 coverage of news, business and sport, directly from Australia’s state capitals and beyond, but is not available within Australia.

News anchors including Stan Grant will deliver coverage from Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne, the Australian Stock Exchange, and even sporting venues.

The new service will include comprehensive coverage and updates of Australia’s favourite sports including AFL and NRL, national and international cricket and horse-racing spectaculars such as the annual Melbourne Cup.

Australia Channel will be aimed at Australian Expats and a wider audience of those interested in Australia, who may be located across North Asia, SE Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Indian sub-continent. The channel will be distributed by growing content distributor and consultancy Lightning International, based in Hong Kong. Depending on territory, Australia Channel will be available as either a premium channel, or formatted for a broader audience.

Speaking during the annual CASBAA Convention in Hong Kong, Australian News Channel CEO, Angelos Frangopoulos said, “Our production centres across Australia are committed to produce high-quality news, business, weather and sports programming in real-time for our viewers to Australia Channel. We are excited to be working with James Ross and the team at Lightning International to deliver the channel to partner operators across Asia and beyond.”

  1. Is this some sort of joke?

Sky have announced the launch of this channel, but it is nowhere to be seen.

It’s website still says ‘coming soon’.

The websites of Sky and Lightning International don’t mention it at all.

The promised live stream does not exist and there are no confirmed rebroadcasters.

It would seem Sky have ‘launched’ a channel that has no distribution platform and cannot be watched by anyone.

Perhaps we should just consider it another ‘unrivalled’ achievement from Frangopoulos and his team at Sky News!

  2. “SKY News has now detailed more of its Australia Channel, streaming to international audiences”

Streaming where? How do I view it?

The only detail that matters (where are how to view) has not be announced?!

WTF is up with Sky. I searched high and low online – not a thing.

  3. With Australia Plus being almost a rebranded Australia Network, with all of the shows AN had, and more being added (Offspring, Janet King, Home & Away, A Place to Call Home, etc., and the best of ABC24), um…why would one bother. And Aust Plus is FTA either off satellites or from local FTA broadcaster. Will Aust Channel be broadcasting the Melbourne Cup? Aust Plus will “live and free”.
