Hints of a Twin Peaks revival?

David Lynch and co-writer Mark Frost tease Twin Peaks fans that something may be in the wind...

2014-10-06_0137Could Twin Peaks be set for a revival?

That’s the question fans are asking after a tweet by David Lynch.

Both “That gum you like is going to come back in style” and “damn good coffee” are iconic quotes from the series which ran for just 2 seasons in 1990 / 1991. That was decades before the moody, sometimes haunting storytelling that has prevailed on the small screen in dramas like True Detective, Fargo and American Horror Story. Lynch’s mystery about the death of Laura Palmer was indeed ahead of its time. Co-writer Mark Frost also tweeted:

Lynch was coy when asked about a Twin Peaks revival at the Lucca Film Festival earlier in the week, saying: “This is a tricky question. I’ve always said [that] I love a continuing story.

“[I prefer] to love a world and to be able to go deeper and deeper into that world. So, there’s always a possibility and you’ll just have to wait and see.”

Hello, Netflix?

Star Kyle MacLachlan and Lynch were also photographed together on a public outing last month.

Meanwhile, this seems like a good excuse to remind you of that beautiful Twin Peaks theme.

  1. It’s based on the idea Laura Palmer’s spirit telling Cooper in the Black Lodge she would see him in 25 years. Which I took to mean after he died he would meet her and learn everything.

The only thing left hanging is what happened over the last 25 years since Bob possessed Agent Cooper.

S2 was drifting into a soap consisting of more red herrings and whatever else surrealism they could think up. They just didn’t have a plan for making a 22 episode a year out of it.

Then ABC forced them to wrap up the Laura Palmer murder. That generated a short spike in the ratings, but left the show with even less purpose.

  2. He has made another post and a video.

Hoping it is more like the period up until the killer is revealed and less like the period where the bald space guy gets kidnapped.

  3. Just read on thefilstage.com, Variety and Deadline that a 9 part Twin Peaks revival has been confirmed and will air on Showtime in 2016. It will be set in the present day. All episodes will be directed by David Lynch

  4. I was obsessed with this show when it came out (I’ve even got the board game tucked away in a cupboard somewhere) and felt lost after the final episode ended. It also introduced me into the bizarre world of David Lynch.
I’m in two minds about this. Twin Peaks set a new benchmark in television and although it only lasted two seasons it’s influence is still felt today.
Lynch has previously stated that he would never return to Twin Peaks, but minds change.
If they do it I just hope it doesn’t ruin the legacy of the original. And who would play Bob?. Frank Silva has since passed away and no one on this planet could freak me out as much as that man could.

  5. A new show set in the world of Twin Peaks would pretty much make my year. Particularly if Sherilyn Fenn was involved in some way.
ABC ruined season 2. A network these days would be smart enough to let Lynch and Frost do whatever they wanted.

  6. What someone is following someone who posted something vague on Twitter. It must be true!

When someone actually announces something, and it gets made, I will pay attention.

Twin Peaks was 8 episodes of TV that worked 25 years because it happened at the right time and place. It was based on there being was killer or motive for the murder to create the air of mystery.

  7. I have the recent Blu-Ray “Entire Mystery” box set, and it has pride of place on my All Time Greats shelf.

Re the second season – yes, it went off the rails in a spectacular fashion, but every episode was still a masterpiece of weirdness. Who could forget episode 14 with Julee Cruise? Or Diane Keaton’s early foray into directing with episode 22? Or the backwards-speaking little guy in the dream near the end?

Hey, I’m such a fan of Twin Peaks that I even love Fire Walk With Me!

  8. A revival would be great if they could recapture the atmosphere and brilliance of the first half of Season 1.
Still one of my all time favourite shows but definitely lost the plot towards the end of Season 1 and yes, Season 2 was a disjointed mess.
    The soundtrack is sublime.

    1. More than just 1 tweet. The anniversary box set was released a few months ago. Lynch has made other teaser comments, as noted. Also appears Showtime’s head of PR, Trisha Cardoso is now following Frost and Lynch, and in return.

  9. Just because Lynch posted one quote on Twitter?
Probably just the 25th anniversary DVD release with a new commentary.

S1 of Twin Peaks was serendipitous.

S2 demonstrated its limitations and was one of the greatest train wrecks in TV history. Lynch was never interested in churning out an episode of TV every week. He always had an eye on using network money to fund a project that he could peddle on the European Arthouse market (e.g. Fire Walk With Me, Mulholland Dr). He stepped back soon after the pilot leaving everything to Frost.

The murder was supposed to be an eternal mystery hanging over the town. By S2 it was just a small town soap full of in jokes with no narrative drive and characters who existed because of something that no longer mattered. As rating plummeted and the cast and crew started squabbling, ABC forced a resolution to the murder on them mid-season. This…
