SBS replays Gough’s final TV interview

SBS will screen the last ever TV interview with the late Gough Whitlam, filmed in 2002.

2014-10-29_2303I don’t usually give much attention to repeats, but this is worth a mention for obvious reasons.

This Sunday night SBS will screen the last ever TV interview with the late Gough Whitlam.

This one-on-one interview with Labor Senator, John Faulkner, was filmed in 2002.

Gough Whitlam: In His Own Words
Gough Whitlam: In His Own Words documents Whitlam’s early parliamentary life, his role in the 1960s and 1970s as Labor’s Deputy Leader and Leader, and taking the ALP to power after a record twenty-three years of Liberal government.

The program explores the remarkable achievements of his three short years in government including the end of conscription, recognising China and re-opening the case of equal pay for women.

The documentary also examines the Whitlam government’s economic credentials and performance, asks questions about Gough Whitlam’s role in the Indonesian invasion of East Timor and the competence of his ministers, and his tactics on the day of his government’s dramatic dismissal by Governor-General Sir John Kerr on Remembrance Day, 1975.

8:30pm Sunday on SBS ONE.

  1. I’m glad I wrote a thank-you letter to him 10 years ago because I would not have been able to get a tertiary education back then if it was not for his policies. Sadly, my old uni in a poor working class area of SA, built during Gough’s time, has now been demolished. Yet, millions of Australian children have been helped over 3 decades by core materials I have produced as a result of my further education. He graciously replied to my letter back then and I now treasure it. Gough Whitlam – a real visionary leader for universal tertiary learning and a true friend of educational ideals. A vision to endure. A really great man.
