It’s time to go…

TV Tonight put 7 questions to 4 recent Big Brother evictees: Dion, Lisa, Jake and Katie.

Here’s a modified version of how they responded.

What was the best part of living in the Big Brother House?
DION: The challenges and tasks that challenged you as a person. There were things you would normally walk away from that you have to do. Obviously there were the people that you go to know (too) but it was the stuff that BB throws at you. That’s what you want to be in there for.

LISA: The relationships you have with people, you form such strong bonds. The experience was amazing but it’s also the people you take with you on the journey. It’s something most people don’t understand, it’s almost like a family.

JAKE: Not knowing what was next. It’s like if you knew the answer it wouldn’t be fun. So for me not having the control, I loved. Things are not always going to go your way but how you deal with them is what makes you.

KATIE: The unexpected twists and turns. We were on our toes the whole time, but winning the $10,000 was not too shabby.

What was the biggest surprise during your time?
Dion: How quickly people break and how quickly their minds turn into BB-mode, rather than losing touch with how they really are on the outside. People are cracking under small things that they wouldn’t normally crack under and it happened within the first week.

LISA: There were things about myself I didn’t realise were in me. There were personality traits people brought out in me: negative and positive. So I learned about myself. I’m probably more harsh and direct and confrontational than I knew I was.

JAKE: It was after I was evicted (learning about) the Lawson, Cat thing. I didn’t see them hooking up. I knew they had gone into sanctuary but I didn’t know anything happened and I spoke to both of them after they came out.

KATIE: The heightened emotions. It’s completely and utterly as you see. I watched the show for the first time last year and I thought ‘You’re crying about that?’ But I couldn’t believe how emotional things got in there.

What have been the questions media have been asking you?
DION: Who do you think will win? There was a lot of talk about my dancing, because we don’t know what gets shown or how we are portrayed.

LISA: Questions about Leo, my relationship with Jake and Skye.

JAKE: The love triangle. My relationship with Tim and winner predictions.

KATIE: The ‘Queen Bee’ label I have been given and whether I am really a mean girl. To which I have answered ‘Absolutely not.’ And why am I walking on my tippy toes the whole time. I do it when I have no shoes on and my because of my dancing background!

How did you feel about the way Gemma’s eviction was staged?
DION: We didn’t know it was a big thing until we came out. It was definitely not how we would have liked it. It was quite brutal to do it that way. But Gemma out of everyone was someone who knew the game the most. For her it was emotional because she didn’t want to leave. She was fine with it, she knew they would amplify things for ratings. Obviously BB wanted to make a spectacle of the first eviction. But it was very difficult to make it a schoolyard pick and for her maybe it was reminiscent of her past.

LISA: It was full on. To put 2 people that we have to choose to their face was quite confronting. We knew, and they knew, as soon as Jake and Gemma were up, exactly how it was going to play out. I guess you sign up for the bad and the good. But to go straight from there to the stage…

JAKE: For me it was mixed emotions. I knew Gemma was playing the game and part of the Big Brother game is something like that. I didn’t forsee that the housemates would have to stand behind us like a schoolyard. I thought it would be more like Survivor where you go up to the Diary Room and choose. I knew Gemma had struggled with that so I was really concerned for her.

KATIE: It felt awful, as soon as we were told how it was going to go down. Regardless of who was going to go, it was cruel and really hard for all of us. It was almost a pack mentality.

Would you ever do another Reality show?
DION: For me it as a positive experience but it can be spun either way. I wasn’t really spun in a negative way so as long as I can stay who I am I would definitely do another one. Something like The Block, where you get to do more things. BB was a lot of sitting around and making your own entertainment.

LISA: Definitely. It was an experience I can never replicate with feelings and bonds I could never replicate. Would I have done it differently? I probably would have.

JAKE: 100%. I loved it. Anything that takes me away from the boring-ness of 9-5 student life is a massive win for me. I felt like Peter Pan in Neverland. A lost boy.

KATIE: 100%. It was amazing. Everything I had expected and more. It definitely shows a lot of our flaws but a journey of self-discovery.

Are you looking for a media career?
DION: I wasn’t but I’ve had a couple of offers. If it’s in my area of expertise, sure, but I didn’t come into this for a whole new career.

LISA: I wouldn’t want to be in front of the camera but if I could do something behind the scenes, or even something fashion-based that would be ideal.

JAKE: Possibly. But the media I would pursue is new media, social media. I don’t see television or radio as a platform I would gravitate towards. There’s not many jobs in those industries but there are loads in online video.

KATIE: I wouldn’t say I’m looking for it, but I have a background in Acting. I’d love to get into Presenting or Hosting. But the chances are quite slim unless I work really hard for it. I’m not expecting it to fall into my lap, that’s for sure.

What’s the one thing going on in the House we don’t know about?
DION: The amount of conversations that aren’t family-orientated. We’ll talk adult for about 20 hours of the day. Most of the time we say ‘This will never get shown because it’s too rude.’ There’s a lot of flatulence. And battery-changes.

LISA: Everyone sees Skye’s bubbly nature but that’s not who she is the majority of the time. You guys are not seeing the real Skye. She has terrible manners and she’s really hard to live with. Excuses are made for her because she’s 20 and she still lives at home, but that’s gotten old now.

JAKE: That Ryan is a housemate. He’s quite a big character in the House and he’s one of those people who is in every conversation.

KATIE: The cliques. There’s the older and younger and a split down the middle. While I was in there there were definitely 2 groups and I don’t think that’s shown very much.

Big Brother airs Monday-Thursday on Nine.

  1. Thanks for another great BB article David.
I like reading their perspective of life in the house. I’ll be interested also when you quiz Sam & Sandra!

  2. Interesting, more insight than we got from their eviction night interviews that’s for sure. David I think the “Are you looking for a media career” question has the fourth reply as Lisa instead of Katie.
