Axed: Foxtel Cup

Foxtel branding in state-based AFL tournament set to go , with spending tipped to go to alternative football content.

2014-11-12_1641The Foxtel Cup, which pitted state-based Aussie rules clubs against one another, will not return in 2015, as the AFL explores discussions for state competitions.

The West Australian reports the WA Football Commission confirmed Foxtel had pulled out of the competition.

The Foxtel Cup had been running since 2011, with the support of the AFL. This year Williamstown (VFL) defeating West Perth (WAFL) for the $100,000 prize.

The article speculates Foxtel will put funding towards alternative football content, including a second series of The Recruit which was noticeably absent in recent Upfronts despite it being one of their best new performers this year.

An AFL spokesperson added, “The Foxtel Cup has been a very strong competition for our state leagues over the last four seasons. As our state leagues continue their development, we are discussing with the various state associations how best they wish to structure their competition requirements, including whether this competition will continue. We expect a final decision to be reached in the near future.”

  1. The Recruit was great TV, but with only 3 clubs expressing any interest in the winner (2 being the 2 newest additions in the AFL who will recruit anyone), it’s like winning The Voice – a bit pointless.
