Nine News buoyed by dominant win over Seven

Nine News Sydney ends the year with a 40-0 scorecard.

2014-06-05_0117With the ratings year over Nine News is celebrating a win over Seven News.

Simon Hobbs, Director of Nine News Sydney buoyed the ranks yesterday with an email to his local team.

“Today marks the last day of ratings for 2014. I am incredibly proud to let you know that Nine News has swept the year 40-0,” he wrote.

“We have now been number one for 4 straight years.

“This is the second straight year we have won 40-0.

“It’s been an incredible year with some huge stories. Just to remind you a little of what you achieved…

“Malaysian Airlines flight 370, Schapelle Corby released from prison, MH17 shot down in the Ukraine, Robin Williams, Barry O’Farrell resigns, Mike Baird takes office, Sochi Winter Olympics, Charlotte Dawson, the Rozelle explosion, Russia invades of the Ukraine, Ebola, Roger Rogerson charged with murder, the young Royals tour Australia with Prince George, Clive Palmer, Oscar Pistorius, The World Cup in Brazil, The War in Gaza, Neville Wran, Ian Ross, Todd Carney, the Commonwealth Games, Joan Rivers, the Blues winning after 9 years, Souths first premiership in 42 years, ISIS, The G20, Gough Whitlam and Philip Hughes…

“When each of these stories broke, Sydney-siders chose to come to you for the news. Each and every time. You were never beaten on your coverage, or in the ratings. You should be very proud.

“You’ve also been a part of the biggest change in evening news in more than 50 years, launching the 1-hour. Not only did you build it, but you made it the best. We now dominate a full hour of primetime nightly.”

Nine’s move to a one hour bulletin was a big gamble but it paid off, even forcing Seven to follow suit (although the latter had experimented with the idea first).

Nine News Melbourne and Brisbane also won their markets, while Seven News dominated Adelaide and Perth.

Despite Nine’s primetime win, it can’t seem to match the same traction in Breakfast, with Sunrise triumphant over Today.

  1. Not a surprising result though 9’s Sydney news is nothing amazing, more a reflection of how weak 7 is. Pairing Ferguson with Mel Doyle would help, or getting in a completely new host known well in Sydney (Sandra Sully, Ray Martin, Karl Stevanovic, Bill Woods).

  2. And whilst ever Mark Ferguson remains as 7’s main newsreader 9 will continue to win. He doesn’t resonate with audiences hence the reason 9 dumped him. Why did 7 think he’d suddenly appeal to viewers? The gap has reached embarrassing proportions. Bath was in reach but now figures like 170000 are occurring.

  3. Well Done to Peter Overton, Ken Sutcliffe, Georgie Gardiner and all of Nine Sydney Team in their Work This Year. Seven might have to add a Female Co-Anchor to assist Mark Ferguson in order to get their 6:00 Sydney news Bulletin back up.
