Peter Allen drama music to Seven’s ears

Plus funding for a black comedy for SBS and a third season of TEN kid's series Mako: Island of Secrets.

2014-11-27_0029A new bio-drama on Peter Allen for Seven, a black comedy for SBS and further seasons of Jack Irish, The Code and Mako: Island of Secrets have been funded by Screen Australia.

Screen Australia allocated $10.7 million to 11 television and film projects.

Sally Caplan, Screen Australia’s Head of Production, said, “We are thrilled to support such a great range of film businesses and filmmakers making a sensational mix of stories. In this round we will back the story of an iconic Australian entertainer in Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door from the award-winning team behind this year’s highest-rating TV drama, INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. An award was made to creator Shelley Birse and the highly admired team behind the popular political drama series, The Code, for its follow-up series.

“Audiences will be spoilt for choice with a great range of stories – from a string of projects based on true events like the hilarious black comedy based on the antics of Chinese-Australian Benjamin Law to favourite crime mysteries Jasper Jones and the new Jack Irish TV series starring Guy Pearce, to an edge-of-your-seat Amazon adventure starring Kevin Bacon [film]. We expect the combination of favourite characters in local stories along with some fresh new faces will appeal to all walks of life.”

Mark Fennessy, CEO Shine Australia, added: “There are few stories in the history of entertainment as remarkable as that of Peter Allen. Against all odds he became a truly iconic singer, songwriter and performer who lit up the stages of Broadway and yet the real story is largely unknown. Together with our partners at Seven Network & Screen Australia we’re proud to bring this true and extraordinary story to life.”

One Response

  1. Looking forward to the Peter Allen bio-drama, hopefully they use the writings of Stephen McLean as a base for this – and don’t go too far into the dark territory of the “King” telemovie based on Graham Kennedy’s life.

It should be a celebration of Peter’s music and his amazing ascent into worldwide success.

Would also love to see this lead to a re-release of some of his earlier singer songwriter material, and live DVD’s etc.
