Sherlock to step up

“It is not enough for it to be a mystery," say Sherlock creators ahead of embarking on the next instalment.

sherlock3Sherlock is expected to return in the UK for a special at Christmas 2015.

The UK drama will begin filming in January, with a new series to film later in the year. Creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are looking to step things up.

“What we want to do for a fourth series is match [series three],” Gatiss told Radio Times, “but it’s not a question of saying ‘Well we need a baddie on that scale [of Charles Augustus Magnussen].’”

“It’s about trying to find stories that have that kind of scale to them.”

Acknowledging some fans objected to the shift in their most recent, Steven Moffat said, “An episode needs to be about something in their lives.

“It is not enough for it to be a mystery.”

“It is a series about a detective, it is not a detective series,” agreed Gatiss.

“The mystery of the week is as nothing compared to the relationship between those two characters and their increasingly large family of characters. That’s the real heart of it, and that’s why it’s a success.”

  1. If they think matching S3 is a goal then its in trouble. S3 was terrible — a couple of good scenes but not one memorable episode in it. Nothing even came close to A Study in Pink, Scandal in Belgravia or The Hound of The Baskervilles.

With Moffat and Gatiss doing Doctor Who and trying to fit Sherlock in around Cumberbatch and Freeman’s schedules it has suffered in quality.
