New Year’s Eve: highlights

Your guide to what's big on the box this New Year's Eve.

2014-12-27_1817ABC is the place to be on New Year’s Eve if you want to see the fireworks live from Sydney Harbour -but it’s not your only entertainment option for the night.

The broadcast includes a parade of ABC personalities, 2014 retrospectives and a ‘special’ episode of Nowhere Boys.

Appearing are Lawrence Mooney, Denise Scott, Tom Gleeson, Alan Brough, Barry Morgan, Adam Zwar, Fran Kelly, Stephanie Brantz, Zan Rowe, Jack Thompson, Kayne Tremills, Jimmy Giggle and live performances by Suze DeMarchi, Kasey Chambers, Josh Earl and The Tap Dogs. Live crosses will include Dave O’Neil (Melbourne), Lawrence Leung (Brisbane), Anne Edmonds (Darwin), Tegan Higginbotham (Perth) and Urila Carlson (New Zealand) plus Peter Helliar, Adam Richard and Tom Ballard.

But other networks have some worthy highlights too, some first-run and other traditional favourites.

TEN has the Graham Norton compilation special (the NYE special will air on New Year’s Day), Nine has P!nk and the annual Village People movie (camp fun but a shocker),  SBS has Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga plus PopAsia and Seven only appears to be celebrating in Melbourne with the city fireworks.

  1. What happened to Kasey Chambers?? Loved the Pub Quiz but Tom Ballard in the helicopter pretending it going down in the fireworks was an absolutely stupid thing to include

  2. When NYE comes around i always look forward to Video Hits’s NYE special but seeing that its not on anymore and Nine are not doing anything like that anymore either this yrs NYE on TV will be borring.

  3. I expected Back to the Future 2 to air somewhere on the night – “we’re in the year two thousand fifteen?”

Still waiting for hover boards, power laces, self drying jackets and pizza hydrators…

  4. And Nine will be showing Can’t Stop the Music with the Village People earlier this NYE. Usually it comes on after the fireworks and countdown but this year it will be straddling midnight and the countdown will happen during it. This movie is memorable for the very brief full frontal shower scene in the YMCA segment which was always cut in the early years when it was shown much earlier. I bought the DVD, and the pause button always receives a heavy workout when I play it.
