Nine postpones Gallipoli screening, pulls Mad City movie.

Nine cancels a media screening, and a siege movie, following the crisis in Sydney.

2014-12-16_2246Nine has cancelled a media screening of its upcoming Gallipoli, due to take place today, following the events in Sydney.

Nine sent an email to guests advising, “…out of respect to those who lost their lives, their families and those affected by this, we have decided to postpone tomorrow’s Gallipoli screening until January.”

It also pulled the movie Mad City from its Saturday night schedule.

In the 1997 film starring John Travolta and Dustin Hoffman, a disgruntled security guard holds a school trip group hostage.

It will now be replaced by the 2003 film Matchstick Men.

  1. while, Eleven aired an episode of The Simpsons on Monday night in which the Simpsons family went to Brazil in which Homer Simpson was held hostage.

However, this was before what unfolded just a few hours later with the deaths of the hostages.

  2. I think Nine pulled the Gallipoli movie because they realised the subject has been done to death and nobody is interested. Looks like they were roped in by the centenary hype.

  3. This. I have to compare this. I don’t care about any bad reaction. Allied casualties were 252,000 at Gallipoli. It defined our country. I mean come on. The hostage movie seems reasonable but this is ridiculous. There is one similarity though between these events, I wonder if anyone can guess it?

  4. Hate to say it, but is this about respect for the victims or is it about the fact that 9 was worried that no one might be listening? Same reason Joe Hockey went ahead with his mid year budget report right in the middle of the siege……hoping no one would be listening. It worked.

  5. I know it’s appropriate given the recent events but really do they need to do this, Galipoli is a historic event and far removed from this weeks tragedy.

But this is not the first time shows/movies have been canceled or delayed because of current events happening.

  6. After all, our PM said “There is nothing more Australian than dropping in at the local cafe for a morning coffee”.

“Galipoli” didn’t stand a chance in these trying times of brave sacrifice…
