Subscription TV …. don’t mention the numbers

ASTRA release talks up the shows that have performed this year -by staying silent on the actual numbers.

shhhASTRA has sent out a Press Release talking up the shows that have performed this year -but neglected to supply any of the audience figures aside from its best performer the AFL preliminary final between Hawthorn and Port Adelaide at 478,847 viewers.

This is a disappointing turn of events from the sector, as it faces a barrage of competitive alternatives and a battle against Piracy.

STV has traditionally been reluctant to reveal ratings numbers due to reporting that has historically compared it to Free to Air television. Its model of +2 channels, repeat viewing and heavy Timeshifting has always played out differently to FTA overnight playouts.

But audiences now understand fragmentation and they, better than anybody, know what it means to view content outside the traditional ‘Live’ playout.

There are also media who are happy to point out the differences in methodology.

Asked why their release did not include audience figures, ASTRA is yet to respond.

One Response

  1. With overnight FTA ratings down to the 700-900k range, and everyone knowing Pay’s model of +2 screenings, Foxtel Go, encores and twice a day screenings etc – as you say David – not sure why Foxtel is squeemish about releasing numbers.

The whole ratings system needs an overhaul IMO

We need to see viewing shares include Pay (which is about 15-20% of nightly viewing) and would be great to get more info about top shows on Foxtel.
