Sunday NRL matches live in 2015

Seven NRL matches set to air live every week – two on Nine and five on FOX Sports.

2014-12-14_2238Sunday afternoon matches will be shown live* in 2015.

NRL CEO Dave Smith said the agreement would mean seven matches live every week – two on Nine and five on FOX Sports.

“There is nothing better than watching games live and now it is going to become a prime time reality on Sundays,” he said.

“Channel 9 will show Sunday games live throughout the season so fans will see every minute of the game as it happens.

“It means NRL games will be shown live on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in 2015.”

* All 26 Sunday matches will be shown live in Sydney with 23 live matches in Brisbane once daylight saving ends.

The first three weeks of Live Sunday Football on Nine will be:
Round 1 – Panthers v Bulldogs
Round 2 – Rabbitohs v Roosters
Round 3 – Rabbitohs v Tigers

“In other words fans will see some of the top teams of 2014, including the Premiers South Sydney, in blockbuster matches to kick off the Sunday coverage,” he said.

“We are scheduling big games that people want to watch on Sundays.

“So not only will we have a great offering on television but there will be better games for fans at the ground on Sunday afternoons – when so many families are able to attend.”

Nine CEO David Gyngell acknowledged there was a clear message viewers wanted live football coverage.

“Everyone prefers to watch games live – we just had to make it happen,” he said.

But there is no confirmation of games in High Definition, something viewers also want, and which was flagged by the Nine boss when the NRL deal rights was signed.

The official schedule for 2015 will be released today.

  1. Unless Andrew Voss gets his job back and that Hadlee bloke gets his marching orders from nein, the NRL can “fall on its head” when that bloke goes and Vossy comes back, so do I

  2. Hope the NRL can be better for this being what the fans want and similar decisions in the future. I can understand the decision being delayed based on commercial considerations.

  3. Nine will be livid in having to bring a live telecast with less ad breaks now !

Also, if the games are live that means less crowd attendance which makes an even worse tv sunday game.

NRL doesn’t care about fans, they just care about tv ratings, just like the AFL !

  4. * In other words if you don’t live in Sydney, nothing changes. Delayed games on Friday night, no live Sunday games, because Nine in Perth, will still want to show a movie from the 50s & 60s, that no-one would ever want to rent from a old time video store.

  5. It’s taken a long time for Gyngell to get the message that delayed sport telecasts don’t work anymore. Maybe in the next NRL deal he’ll now have the foresight to get more live games and get rid of the delayed second game on Friday Nights.

  6. Nine promised us live Sunday games for this year and it never happened. Likewise with some content on Extra. Guess we’ll see what actually happens in 2015.

  7. Hallelujah! It’s a Christmas miracle! Now we just need all games in HD but no sign of that happening until either government legislation is changed or FOX Sports win the next rights.
