FOX discusses X Files, Prison Break revivals, mulls future of 24.

FOX looks to the past for future projects, mostly with their original stars.

2015-01-19_0053At the TCA press tour in the US FOX Television Group chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman discussed the idea of reviving The X Files with original stars David Duchovny and Gillian and creator Chris Carter.

At this stage talks are purely about the logistics of the talent being available but Newman went on to say he was “hopeful” about the outcome.

“David has his show” and “Gillian is doing something in the UK,” he said. That something is The Fall, an acclaimed series in its own right until America gets around to their inevitable remake.

There have been no creative discussions yet about what a new series might entail.

Meanwhile recent media interviews with Prison Break stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell have suggested both are open to a revival of the hit series.

Newman said they would “bring Prison Break back in a heartbeat.”

“There is some speculation in the press about Prison Break, which honestly was slightly news to us,” he told reporters.

“It’s probably the perfect event series. If our old partners in that show are interested, that would be great.”

Prison Break stars Miller, Purcell and Robert Knepper are all currently appearing in recurring roles as villains in The Flash.

Lastly, there is no decision on more of 24.

“We’d love nothing more than to do another 24,” Newman said.

But he did indicate a new 24 instalment may not feature Jack Bauer’s character.

“First of all, we’re not talking about continuing the show without him,” Walden added. “We’re talking about whether there’s one instalment that he’s not in.”

Don’t you just love executive-speak?

  1. Not sure about this one FOX need new content. Take inspiration yes from the past but not neccesarily reboot it unless they are 100% sure it will work and nothing nowadays is a sure bet.

  2. Seems the executives at Fox haven’t realised that they did had a good X-Files replacement – it was called Fringe, before it was cancelled by Fox. At least they gave it a good run, and understandably they will never get Abrams Kurtzman and Orci back to do more Fringe

If TV execs didn’t have the attention span of a retarded grasshopper with their cancelling of shows left right and centre then they may not have this peculiar reoccurring problem of having to mine ideas that have already been done….

  3. I’d rather see a Firefly sequel/reboot on another network. Fox didn’t do it any favours by showing eps out of order and then pulling it with 3 eps unaired. Think it would’ve been a better fit for Showtime or HBO. Netflix would prob be its best hope.

  4. @Pertinax. If Prison Break just lasted one season after they broke out of prison, the show would have ended without storylines being resolved such as the conspiracy that got Lincoln Burrows in jail in the first place, would the prisoners escape to Panama whilst on the run, and the loot buried by DB Cooper.

  5. @johnjet most of the X-Files were standalone episodes, not investigating the alien mythology. After season1, at least 2/3 were standalone. There’s easily over 100 monster of the week episodes for your viewing pleasure.

@Pertinax. I agree with you that they did their best work in Vancouver, but I think season 6 and 7 which were shot in LA were still pretty good.

@Kissmad. I’d love to see a return to the Buffyverse. I think its less likely but Joss Whedon may have a bit of time on his hands after a certain movie premieres in April

  6. By the time The X-Files moved to LA, the Mytharc made no sense and the show wasn’t the same without its original production style. There’s only a handful of eps worth watching in the last 4 seasons.

All they need to bring it back is Duchovny and Anderson, they have already made a MOtW movie since.

I don’t see the point of a Prison Break remake. It never made much sense after the broke out of Prison and it became an endless series of chases with narrow escapes.

  7. I hope they do bring back The X-Files, it’s my favourite show. I even wouldn’t mind if Monica and John are in it instead of Fox and Dana! Of course Fox and Dana would be my first choice.

I wonder if this will give FOX the incentive to release the original series on blu-ray. I’ve been wanting to watch the series again but I’m waiting for a blu-ray release.

I wonder if Buffy or Veronica Mars will ever be revived…

  8. Prison Break had a chance to go out as a good, solid series after two seasons, but Fox convinced everyone to keep the show alive and it went downhill from there.

  9. The X-Files lost its way, when nearly every episode became them investigating aliens and UFO’s. I liked the first couple of seasons when they focused on a wide variety of strange cases.

  10. @tricks Both Duchovny and Anderson want to do either another movie or more of the show. Last week on The Nerdist podcast promoting The Fall Season 2, 95% of the hour long podcast was all about her talking X-Files and would not stop talking about how she wants to start the show back up again.

Look up #XFiles2015 hashtag on Twitter and you’ll see it.

  11. The X Files was my favourite show of the 90s, but I don’t want to see it come back. It went downhill when Mulder left and the other two agents came in. And the second movie they did was absolute crap.

Also Gillian Anderson has moved onto bigger and better things. The Fall was an amazing series.. of which I hope they don’t try to squeeze out a third season.

More of her in Hannibal is all I need.

  12. Prison Break, really. First two seasons were good but it lost the plot after that. Don’t know why you’d want to revive it so soon or at all to be frank.

  13. I’d love Prison Break back, although Wentworth’s character did die in the end of the series, so not sure how that would work.

And 24 without Jack Bauer would be pointless, unless they bring back another major character like Tony from older series as the focal point and have him and Chloe together.
