Seven launches HbbTV coverage of Australian Open

16 courts, press conferences, social media and scores, Seven's HbbTV has sports fans covered.

2015-01-20_0115Seven’s HbbTV broadcasts of the Australian Open began yesterday, heralding a first for the network.

Viewers who have compatible television sets and internet can now watch the match of their choice from any broadcast court, as well as the Seven and 7TWO coverage.

Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner said: “This is what we’ve been working towards. Finally, the viewer – no matter where they are – becomes the producer and director of their own live coverage. They get to call the shots. It’s perfect for these events where so much action occurs simultaneously. It’s a reflection of our commitment as a company to keep on challenging ourselves to innovate and build on what is already an outstanding broadcast.”

Everything but comprehensive High Definition coverage on Free to Air.

In a first for sports broadcasting in Australia, Seven and Yahoo!7 have combined to deliver the most complete and innovative coverage of the tennis season ever seen with fans now able to watch the match of their choice Live, Exclusive and Free on mobile, tablet and desktop devices as well as Hybrid TV.

  1. This HBBTV is cool i think it will cancel out Foxtel in time, As i have said before the Internet can be the FTA TV’s best friend if they know how to utilse it well. Now i think the 7 Network have given us the answer i think they have taken over in trying new things from TEN which has obviously gone backwards. How ironic.

  2. So 14 years after the BBC did it for Wimbledon the Aussie networks are catching up. By my reckoning then you might even be able to watch it in HD by 2022.

  3. @harrypotter1994

When I posted that comment the ratings weren’t available on this site as yet.

Are u sure that 7 two actually bet 7 cause 7two highest rating was late but 7 was for night 1. What time does late start? Konnakis game did start earlier then kyrgios and the konnakis game aired on 7 and 7two.

  4. Brilliant coverage. Definitely feeling spoilt for choice. I hope the ratings reflect the fact they are offering something miles ahead of what we are used to.

Yes HD would be nice but, to be honest I dont think it makes a massive difference for tennis, unlike the afl or soccer.

  5. Seven have set the bar very high for sporting coverage. People whinge about HD, Ultra HD or even 3D – don’t worry about that for now, choice like this is what we really need. I hope I see Seven use this in the next olympics. Other networks need to take note.

  6. I tried the online streams yesterday and there were times when certain streams weren’t working. I would’ve like to try the app but they did not make one available for windows phones.

Last night the kokkinakus match was initially airing on 7 and then it was moved to 7two for the kyrgios match. The commentators did a poor job of explaining the changeover and there were no visual cues on screen to indicate the change of channel to remain with the match. Things like that need to be handled better. I wonder which match rated better?

  7. Being able to select from 16 different courts was fantastic. Well done 7! But!!! Why run your second FTA tennis coverage on 7two when you have your HD channel 7mate sitting there running rubbish like “Pimp My Ride”?

Last night between 6-7pm the coverage switched from 7 to 7mate for the news and for that single hour we got to watch our home grand slam in HD like the rest of the world can. Why do you do this to us, 7????

Please…run it on 7 and 7mate, then when the news comes on at 6 continue the 7 coverage on 7two.

Why can’t they do this? Am I missing something???
