2.09m sees Djokovic trump strong Celebrity launch for TEN

Ratings: Seven scores a staggering 41.4% share -but TEN still pulls off its best Reality launch since 2009.

djokA knockout 2.09m viewers tuned in to see Novak Djokovic presented with his fifth Australian Open title giving Seven a staggering 41.4% share last night.

The bulk of the final against Andy Murray scored 1.88m viewers, but adding in Regional viewers in went to 2.82m viewers.

There were 830,000 viewers in Melbourne and another 557,000 in Sydney for the Presentation, screened very late in the evening.

That made it a challenging night for TEN to launch I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! but the news was also good.

TEN pulled in 1.2m viewers for its “Opening Night” portion of the show and another 1.14m for “Welcome to the Jungle.” For TEN it was their biggest new Reality TV launch since MasterChef in 2009 with #ImACelebrityAU trending at #2 worldwide last night.

It also trumped the Australian Open preview which went head to head in some markets, with 758,000 for Seven.

Nine’s best last night was Nine News, a more than decent 1.3m viewers.

Full ratings analysis resumes next week with the start of 2015 survey.

  1. Just goes to show a lot of people will watch free to air if you put something first run on and market it properly. I suspect anything less than 1.1 of I’m A Celebrity would have been a disaster given the amount spent on promotion. A solid result for the real test will be Wednesday or Thursday when people have an understanding of what the series is like day to day and decide if they want to commit the time to it. I’m still skeptical I think MKR and the Block will keep their audience.

  2. I’m a Celebrity would perform better once a week over a longer period, so they don’t burn audiences out, but obviously that would increase what is already a high cost base and celebs and presenters wouldn’t be willing to commit to that long away from friends and family.

  3. Most people won’t have seen I’m a… Ten launched it when little was happening in the Cricket or Tennis so easy to check out.

Of course even Celebrity Belly Flop started well…

The tennis was very dramatic but not a great game. Novak needs to see a sport medicine expert, virologist, neurologist or rheumatologist urgently and without Lendel Murray needs a psychiatrist badly.

  4. I don’t understand why the mens final starts so late. Throughout the Australian open the night sessions starts at 7pm why the change for the mens final considering the match can go for 5 sets? I flicked over around 7.40ish (while watching I’m a celebrity) and they were still warming up. When I switched over after I’m a celebrity they were barely into the first set. The first 2 sets went for 2.5hrs. I’m wondering how I’m a celebrity will go against mkr and block tonight.
