ITV is set to revive action series The Saint, which starred Roger Moore as Simon Templar before he became James Bond.

Based on the novels by Leslie Charteris, the series aired from 1962 to 1969 depicting the thief leaving a calling card of a stick figure of a man with a halo at the scene of his “crimes.”

Ed Whitmore, writing the new drama with Chris Lunt, tells RadioTimes.com that the time is ripe for a modern-day re-imagining.

“There is a post-Breaking Bad appetite for morally grey characters,” says Whitmore.

“Simon Templar is a kind of Robin Hood figure, he’s timeless,” he adds.

No word on who will play the all-important lead.

  1. The 1940s films are often shown on late night TV, the early ones featuring George Sanders in the role-no one did morally ambiguous like George!

  2. Wasn’t this show already rebooted in the US but bombed out. I’ve heard of so many potential including reboots that either bomb out or never materialise. So I’m not expecting this to go anywhere.

    1. I’ll go along with that… better to rebroadcast the original series that have these oh-so-tawdry “remakes”. They(ITV) tried this with another of their vintage shows recently, “Randall & Hopkirk – Deceased”, Mike Pratt in the role of Jeff Randall, one half of a private investigation firm, Keith Hopkirk, the ghost of Randall’s partner, played by Kenneth Cope, and Australian-born Annette Andre as Keith,s widow, Jeannie(I think her character name was) the company secretary. There were only 26 episodes made in 1968 but a recent attempt at a revival with different actors, a total flop!

  3. It’s already been remade several times, not very successfully. There rumours about new versions every year and a pilot was made in the US a few years ago but not picked up. The article says ITV are planning to shoot a pilot in 2016.

The style of the old show, only one start and one recurring characters with a new setting every week, is a lot different from modern TV shows post VCR.
