STUDIO will today replay the documentary Curtain Call, following the passing of actor Terry Gill.

The veteran performer died yesterday aged 75.

The film, which premiered last year, features Terry Gill and wife Carol-Ann at their children’s theatre, The Tivoli.

Curtain Call is a revealing and affectionate portrait of this eccentric couple – as they face eviction from their beloved little theatre by a landlord intent on pursuing more commercial ventures.

Now aged in their 70s – these two irrepressible oddballs are brought to vivid life, revealing a story of unlikely love, impossible dedication and a theatre for which they are prepared to sacrifice everything. Viewers will likely recognise Terry Gill – a well-known television character actor of the 70s and 80s who appeared regularly on shows like Prisoner, Homicide, The Flying Doctors and Bluey.

Director Justin Olstein has known the Gills for some time, having worked at their theatre in his early 20s. Says Olstein: “I have always found Terry and Carole Ann incredibly interesting. As actors, they really wanted to be performing the great plays on the grandest stages, but instead found themselves performing fairytale pantomimes to kids. And they just ran with it! When I heard they were under threat of closure, I knew it would be a great opportunity to document this larger-than-life couple in all their candour.”

The film was conceived by Justin Olstein and directed by Olstein and Eleanor Sharpe. It is produced by Nick Bird of Waterbyrd Filmz.

STUDIO Remembers: Terry Gill at 5pm today (Thursday), and replay at 1.30am and 8am tomorrow (Friday).

  1. Highly recommended – what an amazing story of an incredible couple, and their dedication to their craft. Well done Studio for airing this so soon in tribute to Terry.

    1. It captured the torrid but inseparable dynamic between Terry and Carol-Ann very well. Terry was always humble even though he was in the spotlight, and what you see is what you get. Well done to STUDIO and Justin’s doco.
