Sunrise Cash Cow unhappy over Today copycat

Today show introduces 'Blocky' with free money -but someone else is suitably unimpressed.

It’s the Cash Cow you have when you’re not having a Cash Cow…. The Today show now has its very own character giving away money to lucky viewers, dubbed ‘Blocky’ and wearing a Block-style hardhat.

Today still has some ground to make up in the ratings battle, but no doubt ‘Blocky’ and his wad of cash are here to help (not sure about that name). However Sunrise‘s very own CashCow was having none of it and took to Twitter to make her feelings known.

Over to you ABC News Breakfast.

  1. Yet another reason I don’t watch either shows in the morning, and I just don’t have the time. Much rather have SkyNews to get the headlines then catch up on Letterman with my breakfast if I have time.

  2. @Sunny – You’d need to go back to around the 60s to see who was ‘first’ with a breakfast news-type show. I vaguely recall various ‘Today’ etc. shows. Tony Charlton, Mike Walsh, Diana Ward, etc., etc.
Kerry Packer approached Kerry Stokes, then owner of CTC7 Canberra, to take his ‘new’ ‘Today’ show, to be told “sorry, just signed with TEN for their new show “Good Morning Australia”. Ref. “Kerry Stokes-The Boy From Nowhere” by Andrew Rule.

  3. All this talk about Seven copying Nine & vice versa is true, but at the Sunrise haven’t yet copied Today in staring the show at 5.30am instead of 6.00am,

  4. Am I the only one who was disappointed to read this story and learn the copycat wasn’t called the ‘Dosh Dog’, ‘Peso Pig’, or the ‘Two-bit Toad’?

  5. Sunny – you can add a fairly recent example….House Rules copying The Block. They all copy each other, and it’s naive for anyone to think that only one network is guilty of it.

  6. I’m a regular Sunrise viewer but was quite shocked at their ‘big news’ today. A Hawaiian holiday for them is not big news, but also a great reminder how much these breakfast shows are turning more and more into entertainment shows. They celebrated like a bunch of kids going on their first overseas holiday – just after covering the release of an Australian journalist in Egypt, and discussing Abbott’s leadership.

  7. I am so over breakfast television it really is scrapping the bottom of the barrell in television programming they all copy each other.. Look at this morning the so called big announcement .they stringed us along about this big announcement and what ws it another junket for the sunrise crew they get to go on to hawaii yet again . I mean seriously how many times has sunrise been to hawaii. That’s not a big announcement . Then they ask their viewers to pay for their own holiday to hawaii to join them . Seriously . A big announcement would have been if they gave away 20family Hawaiian holidays for the viewers now thats a big announcement .what a let down the show was this morning.

  8. If the commercial networks are so desperate for ratings that they have to bribe viewers with tens of thousands of dollars to tune in, what does that say about the content? Having said that, come on ABC News Breakfast, get with the game!

  9. @MM – But wasn’t Sunrise a copy of Today. Today was on years before 7 copied it with their Sunrise show. Better Homes and Gardens, a copy of Burkes Backyard, TT a copy of ACA, and the list goes on.

  10. Another reason not to watch nine, why do they copy everything or have other channels leave offs in the hope that they are going to resurrect something, no originality at all these days, to say it used to be a first class channel a few years ago, feel it is starting to go backwards yet again.

  11. Beyond tacky! Why do these shows continue to treat us with such contempt? How do they not see how embarrassing this is? Just because two people in a focus group once said the cow was funny, doesn’t mean the majority who watch don’t shake their heads in horror at these stupid gimmicks. It’s time to Moooove on 7 & 9 coz we sure have.
