TEN closes in on new mystery show

By the end of the month we will know what TEN's new franchise is for third quarter.

tenschedTEN will soon be announcing its mysterious new franchise, that will underpin its third quarter.

At the network Upfronts late last year, TEN indicated a key programme was yet to be revealed to market.

TEN Programmer Beverley McGarvey recently told TV Tonight all would be revealed soon.

“It won’t be Drama,” she teased.

“It will be early evening, so we’ll make an announcement before the end of February.

“It will either be constructed reality or entertainment….”

Any guesses?

  1. If the new show is in early evening, I think it’s a 5o’clock or 5.30 game show to lift Family Feud or news. Or TEN might shorten TEN Eyewitness News and slot the (game) show in 5.30.

    1. 5-6pm is not Ten’s problem. Their 5pm News is often their highest rating program for the night – they’re not going to cut it in half or move it. The new show will be attempting address the same timeslot as I’m a celeb is sort of doing.

  2. I have no theory to back this up but I was looking at international formats for reality shows (as there is a good possibility it will be an import) and I found this show called “Star Academy” and in a nutshell it it BB + Australian Idol. Wouldn’t be surprised if its this.

  3. I think it’s some kind of singing show maybe “Rising Star” like in the US got some great ratings there…or could it be the new look Australian Idol again? I think Ten are doing great trying new things taking risks I don’t see other networks having new content…Am enjoying Ten loving I’m a Celeb regardless some of the negative feeds.

  4. Another reality program with a twist? They are sitting in the jungle, imitating a program called big brother, and talking about whats in the news …….

  5. I wonder if those Japanese celebrity/comedians shows where they just seem to sit around and chat, compete in weird games or even do elaborate pranks would work here.

    1. ” even do elaborate pranks”- like Candid Camera with Allan Funt? era-1960.
““It will either be constructed reality or entertainment….” – Does this mean “constructed reality” is not entertainment?

  6. Is it Gagglebox where people are herded like geese into a large box of contructed reality and forced to watch Channel Ten shows on a TV with an OzTAM meter?

  7. Dancing on Ice or The Jump ? Something where you have to build a house then invite all your neighbours round for dinner and let them criticise everything you’ve done

    1. You forgot the part about it being in the jungle, and it’ll pit former Bachelorettes against an All star team consisting of former pop stars and celebrity chefs. Carrie Bickmore to host.

  8. When they say new franchise its not something that been “used” on the other networks. Its not Big Brother. I don’t know what TEN have planned but it had better be something good because right now they have next to nothing.

      1. BB is still with Nine and my understanding is there would be a 12 month window before any shift is possible. The longer Nine takes to walk away from the show the more it can impede TEN’s chance of a production. Maybe for 2017?

        1. There is nothing stopping TEN from acquiring BB. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. I know it says ‘New Franchise’, but I am thinking it may be the rival version

          1. Yes there is. Nine has the option. Note that 12 months after Seven’s option on Australia’s Got Talent expired Nine swooped on it. For a show like BB you also need a lot of time to cast and build. If Nine waits until mid 2015 to let the show go (strategic reasons?) it may be some time before it is revived.
