The Feed asks Why Aren’t There More Men Kissing on TV?

Why are network television shows so averse to male-to-male kissing, leaving it to those cool kids on cable?

SBS 2’s The Feed this week asked why network television shows are so averse to male-to-male kissing, preferring to leave it to those cool kids on cable?

Host Marc Fennell even went above and beyond for the sake of the story, which has since attracted a bit of social media comment.

  1. I haven’t had a chance to read TWD comments yet but that’s really disappointing to hear there was a lot of negativity towards the kiss. I actually clapped when they kissed! I knew the characters were gay but I wondered if they would be ‘allowed’ to be affectionate with each other. I think it’s great that in such a macho and popular show that they are depicting a same sex relationship in the same way they have the straight relationships – will hopefully add to the fight to break down stigma, stereotypes and homophobic attitudes.

  2. Neighbours male to male kissing is pretty tame. Days of our Lives is surprisingly pretty full on, with their gay male characters. It may not have been the main reason, but it was definately a coincidence that when Days stopped showing on fta, it was just before Will’s coming out, and eventual romance/ marraige to Sonny.

  3. Some of the comments on here I find truly disturbing and outrageous in the current day and age.

According to some people on this forum, male-female kissing/sex is fine, yet anything else is “icky” and should be left for ” for soap operas and mushy relationship drama”. These comments are not only offensive and homophobic, but they also exclude the hundreds of thousands of non-heterosexual Australians. I’m pretty sure all of us will agree that the point of acting is to depict real life, or at least seem realistic, so how is right to exclude 1 in 20 of the population from having their sexuality depicted realistically on TV, all because a few backward and stupid individuals find it “icky” that a sexuality other than theirs is shown.

ABC is pretty much America’s only diverse network, with Shondaland shows, including How to Get Away with Murder, a plot based drama, as well as…

  4. I think this piece is generally pretty spot-on, although I think that not mentioning Glee was a glaring omission. That’s a very commercial program that does straight, lesbian, and gay male kissing really well. But then again, with the fabulous Ryan Murphy at the helm perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised.

Personally I’d love to see more male-male kissing on TV. It’s incredibly hot :-).

  5. A lot of us dont give a toss who kisses who or who has sex relations who on tv but please leave it for soap operas and mushy relationship drama and leave that rubbish out of plot based drama, it degrades the plot IMHO-OC

    1. This too is a dumb statement, so its not tolerable in “plot based drama” but acceptable in soaps? Whats the difference? Degrades the plot, what a stupid statement, if its ok in one its ok in another….

    1. That’s the 21st century Aussie spirit, Jennome – why should a lot of *us* be made uncomfortable by having to watch *them* kissing? Well done, fella, well done.

          1. @Jayfunk….Tom Cruise kissing Kelly McGillis in Top Gun was featured on Gogglebox last night, there was a fair amount of reaction, comment and focus on it….and yes it could well be considered ikky by many folk…..it was also funny

  6. I’m not surprised by the lack of gay kissing on tv The Walking Dead had a gay kiss last week that lasted maybe 20 seconds and the IMDB board for TWD was full of complaints saying it was disgusting and gross. The Originals with all the problems this season is having is doing a really good job with their gay couple.
