Third group shock for My Kitchen Rules

Seven prepares to extend its season with more contestants -but spoils the surprise with a promo first.

2015-02-18_2356Seven looks set to run My Kitchen Rules longer this year with a third group of contestants entering the kitchen in a surprise twist.

Victorian oyster farmers Matt and Rob were eliminated from Group 2 but the remaining contestants were surprised by the arrival of chef Colin Fassnidge.

“I’m about to throw the cat amongst the pigeons. I’ve been rounding up my own group of home cooks. A group that is dedicated, passionate and motivated to win,” he said.

“We’re about to head off on our own instant restaurant round. And when we’re done we’ll be back to really shake things up.”

The new teams are :

Western Australia – Drasko & Bianca – Ambitious Couple
Queensland – Rob & Dave – Mates
Queensland – Lynn & Tony – Married Window Cleaners
Victoria – Jane & Emma – Polar Opposites
NSW – Will & Steve – The Poms
NSW – Katie & Nikki – Promo Girls

Seven has a good track record of adding a fresh element to each season. A third group ups the stakes foe everybody and potentially extends the season. Last year there was considerable feedback that the home restaurants were much more engaging than group challenges.

But Seven promos again spoiled the surprise (it seems to be an annual problem for My Kitchen Rules) by running a promo with the new teams, minutes before they had been revealed on air.

  1. I’ve always wondered where Pete & Manu go inbetween courses – you never see them in wide shots and the other night when the Mother & Son were doing the Dancing, they looked no where to be seen. Makes me wonder how much they actually have to do with the contestants!

  2. I officially give up on MKR. So stupid for them to drag this out and I hope that this is the end of unecessarily long and dragged reality shows (Block, MKR, House Rules, I am looking at you). Let’s go back to a 1/2 times a week formats and open up the primetime schedule for some variety.

  3. 7 are taking a big risk here dragging it out, IMHO. I think once the audience has to re-engage with yet another group of contestants, they may lose interest, especially without P&M. Additionally, without their two stars, it could feel like a totally different show. I’m guessing Pete and Manu refused to, or contractually didn’t have to, do the extra work.

  4. I record MKR and skip all ads and spoilers. I never liked Colin though but perhaps he will grow on me. Maybe Pete and Manu are taking a break? MKR is going to be so long this year. Not that I mind.

  5. I like the idea i do but why Colin? Why not Pete and Manu? I know they are trying to make it different somehow but if they are going to do it then they should have gone with Colin and someone else. His opinion is way different to Pete and Manu so where is the point of difference here? Should be interesting though. The Austin Powers guy i already hate from that one promo i saw.

    1. Pete and Manu are bland central. A very boring (and bored) pair. I suspect they’re only doing it for the money. Anyone would be better. The judges in Masterchef run rings around them, in all aspects. And they’re fun.

  6. I felt sorry for the boys last night. l would like to see the teams eliminated get a second chance. Some obviously handle it better than others. One look at Colin and the temperature rises in my household!

  7. @BarrieT – same, watched previous years, but just can’t be bothered sitting through it all this year. Bring on Masterchef though, it’s more snappy and doesn’t seem to be dragged out anywhere near as much.

  8. This really isn’t that different from the gatecrashers they had who cooked last year (Carly and Tresne, Josh and Danielle, and the others)

I’ll be watching even though I have no idea who Colin is

  9. I’m so glad I decided not to watch this year. Last year seemed to drag on forever and it means you are committed to watching the same lame cooks night after night for months. I like a bit of variety in my viewing

    1. I’m with you….I found that last year seemed to go so long and the commitment for three months (I think that’s how long it was) I was not prepared to do again….thank goodness as this season will go well after Easter!!!

  10. Admittedly, this is my first season of the show that I’m watching (mainly just for local Mount Isa team), but the show seems to drag… a lot. And this third group of contestants aren’t really a ‘surprise’ or a ‘twist’, rather just an easy way for 7 to extend the running of the show a week or two and get more money.

Secretly hoping they do what Trump did this season on The Celebrity Apprentice and do a mass elimination.

    1. I hear that folk from Tassie will be entering the double-header round…

I don’t watch this either but you can’t blame Seven for wanting to keep having 1.6 – 1.7 million people tune in for 30 minutes of ads each night. Gotta turn that $1b loss around somehow.

  11. This is ridiculous at this rate they all to be still cooking at Christmas. And wouldn’t it be nice to see a female judge. Really too many egos and not enough top class chefs !

  12. One of the advantages of PVRing is you can skip all of these promos so I fortunately didn’t get spoiled and I like the fact Colin will be the only judge in this round as it freshens it up just enough.
