SBS has paid tribute to Malcolm Fraser today, was passed away this morning.

SBS was established under the Fraser government in 1975 as SBS radio, prior to SBS TV in 1980.

SBS Chairman Nihal Gupta and SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid issued a joint statement:

Malcolm Fraser was a founding father of SBS. As Prime Minister he played a fundamental role in supporting the ongoing funding of Radio 2EA and 3EA, ensuring their survival and carrying them forward, before establishing SBS under legislation in 1978. He was responsible for the creation of multicultural television Channel 0/28 in 1980 – which became SBS television as Australian audiences know it today.

Mr Fraser understood and valued SBS’s point of difference. He was a champion for diversity and tolerance, which are at the very core of SBS’s purpose to celebrate multicultural diversity and contribute to social cohesion.

As we this year mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of SBS Radio, we acknowledge the great contribution Malcolm Fraser made, not only in the development of SBS, but to Australian society as a whole.

Mr Fraser was an incredibly well-respected Australian, whose legacy is valued enormously by the SBS community.

  1. The 2EA and 3EA radio stations were established in 1975 under the Whitlam government. The later Fraser government then expanded SBS radio and started SBS television.

  2. @Maev….Sydney Agree with your comment. Often people who exit politics and before they enter are better people than when in it. For some reason whilst in politics people seem to loose the plot. Anyway Malcolm was a man who seemingly constantly evaluated his position on certain issues. RIP

  3. Very sorry to hear of Mr Fraser leaving this world….I have no particular political leanings…but I did like the man he became after his political life…RIP
    And love my SBS…thank you.
