West Perth football club ignored advice about a sponsorship deal with the Nine Network, claims the WAFC.

West Perth football club ignored advice about a sponsorship deal with the Nine Network, according to the WAFC.

WAFC’s Gary Walton said, “Seven’s position to not broadcast games featuring a team that displays the logo of a rival television network on their playing jumpers is the same position that Channel 9 expressed when we were discussing commercial broadcast rights with them in 2013.

“We appreciate that West Perth has suggested removing the logo for their International Round game but this does not provide a resolution for the WAFL finals, should West Perth qualify.

“The WAFC provided ongoing advice to West Perth throughout the club’s negotiations with Channel 9 in early 2014 to try and prevent commercial conflicts from occurring,” he said.

“This included correspondence throughout the months of February and March, 2014, prior to West Perth advising the WAFC it had signed an agreement with Channel 9 on March 26, 2014.

“Correspondence from the WAFC included advice that a clause should be added to the agreement saying the Channel 9 logo could only appear on the jumper for 2014 as the WAFC was negotiating with Channel 7 to televise games beyond that.

“West Perth chose to ignore this advice and sign an agreement with Channel 9 with the knowledge that the WAFC was working with Channel 7 on an exclusive basis.”

The story hitting back at criticism by the West Perth club has been published in the Seven West Media newspaper, the West Australian.

  1. Now they have signed a deal with the Sunday Times newspaper. Keeping in mind the other newspaper in WA, The West Australian, is owner by… Seven West Media!
West Perth are just either enjoying this, and/or doing the damaged to themselves.

  2. The ABC Covered the WAFL Last year.
East Perth had Seven on there jumper and West Perth had Nine on there jumper.
    Whats the difference ????????????????????
WAFL had to find sponsors so Seven would show the football.
For local fans West Perth defeated East Frem by about 10 goals.

  3. If Seven decided to go sponsor a rugby league team for example and plaster their logo on the front of the jersey then the same thing would happen. I get sponsorship is money and everything but when it’s a rival network they have every right to be angry if you ask me. Seven pay the money for this and Nine pays the money for the league. Sorry but if it was the other way around nine would be saying the exact same thing.

      1. Why is it petty? Makes sense to me. What is petty…. Is seven telling a team that they can not have their sponsors logo on their jumper. And the lead singer of the Heartbreakers is also Petty.

  4. Disagree with earlier comments think that channel 7 have every right to want the 9 logo to be removed, when any one is paying mega bucks to televise a programme they want their channel to be advertised not someone else’s, I think the players are the petty ones, what difference should it make to them what they wear, they are out there to play a game not worry about the outfit they are wearing.

    1. Explain how the players are being petty when they likely played little, if any, role in securing the sponsorship, and wouldn’t be included in any on-going negotiations about how to fix the issue? The situation has nothing to do with the players outside of preventing their performances from being seen on TV.

    2. I thought Ch 7 were being paid to show it not sure why, when the ABC showed it rating went from 5 to about 32 for the GF most in the 10 to 20 range, why would you bother,
Seven are the main AFL sponsor in WA and its influence pervades everything, I listen sometimes listen to PR and 7 have their own man on the breakfast show to make it very difficult for any other football code to get a look in
      Funny place Perth

  5. This is ridiculous. Such a petty thing to be up in arms over. I can’t believe a network is so fearful of such small advertising when they themselves will have so many avenues for promotion and the like.

  6. In my opinion regardless of if they were told of possible issues Seven is acting like a child, and for that matter most commerci networks in this country are the same.
Everyone knows other networks exist and I don’t see a problem with a logo on a jersey.
