US cable network AMC has approved an untitled Walking Dead companion series for two seasons.

To be set in Los Angeles, the first season will debut in mid 2016 and consist of six one-hour episodes.

To be produced by Walking Dead execs Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert, along with Sons of Anarchy’s Dave Erickson it will feature Cliff Curtis, Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane, and Alycia Debnam.

“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman said in a statement.

“I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we’ve accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven’t scratched the surface yet when it comes to The Walking Dead.”

Showrunner Erickson added, “This vote of confidence from our partners at AMC is gratifying, to say the least. We’ve been blessed with amazing writers and a stellar cast—and we can’t wait to build this apocalyptic drama over the next two seasons and hopefully beyond.”

Dickens recently told EW, “I like the role. I like that she was this bad-ass, Sigourney Weaver-type character. It was so fun, and the stakes are so high. It’s just so exciting, a fun sort of fantasy world to be in when I’ve done some other very grounded pieces lately. It’s always good to keep it exciting. Apparently there are more zombies that need killing.”

    1. That is a separate show not related to the WD other than the general zombie thing which is very popular at the moment-Z Nation is obviously hoping to exploit this as a spin off of the popular movie of a few years ago.

  1. It takes two seasons to tell if a premium cable drama is going to work, so they are making 1 season and showing it as 2.
There are definitely some bits that The Walking Dead skipped to get straight into Rick’s story that would be interesting.

With all the arguments over budgets ands sacking of showrunners the series is suffering. The current block’s scripts aren’t as good as previous ones. The silly business with firearms is just ridiculous. Rick already hid a gun outside, they gave him his revolver to be the Constable, they find guns and ammo where they go, the walls are not secure, they are allowing them to walk around with katana’s, machetes and a hunting crossbow. So why steal revolvers. That’s not being cautious or smart it’s being incredibly reckless for no reason.

  2. I like that they are going to show the immediate aftermath of the zombie apocalypse in this series. Six episodes for the first season is also probably a good amount
