US action thriller Helix has been axed by Syfy after two seasons.
The drama from executive producers Steven Maeda and Ron Moore revolved around the Centers for Disease Control pathologist Dr. Alan Farragut (Billy Campbell) and his estranged ex-wife, Dr. Julia Walker (Kyra Zagorsky), after they’re sent to the Arctic to investigate a mysterious disease outbreak.
Hollywood Reporter notes its second season averaged 563,000 total viewers down from 1.8 million total viewers in season one. Adding Timeshifted viewers it netted the largest increases ever for a Syfy scripted series.
But Syfy recently renewed 12 Monkeys, currently airing in Australia, and has several other dramas in development including Childhood’s End filmed in Melbourne.

I don’t watch this, but my better half does. She enjoyed season 1 well enough… But she wasn’t even expecting season 2 to exist. The whole idea of it was tailor made for one season only.
I quite enjoyed Season 1 – but pushing myself to finish season 2…because I have so much invested in it
This second season really is quite lame and only loosely ties into season 1
I think they must have hired the following writers
Not surprising, season 2 was really, really bad
It’s not like S1 was good. A ridiculous idea, dreadful scripts, no budget and hammy actors.
Worked brilliantly for Sharknado but it won’t hold an audience for a long running series.
I really wanted to dig it (coz I love Ron Moore) but bailed halfway through the first season.
Not a patch on Outlander.
Outlander is alright but nothing special, but still no GoT or anything like that, if it didn’t have the over the top sex it be better then alright. I mean the sex is worse then black sails and that’s about pirates. I do love the accent tho, needs more sci fi tho
Moore works on Outlander, not GOT.
Not sure how much involvement RDM had in the show. IMDB gives him no credits on S2 and only exec producer for S1. Perhaps he only came up with the concept of the show and didn’t work on actually putting it together.
Not surprising it’s been axed – the second season was a bigger mess than the first.
I axed this program myself, at the start of season 2. I couldn’t understand who was who and what was going on! And I didn’t care about any of the characters. Season 1 was only barely OK.
I generally love SF but thought this one was just plain ridiculous.
I had similar thoughts and also love sci fi, but I didn’t even make it to the end of season 1. It was very slow, hard to follow at times and I struggled to understand where the story was leading to.
“Axed” … such a harsh word! Sounds like they did something wrong. Can’t you just say “Cancelled”? 🙂
After 8 years that would make site searches very inconsistent. There are reasons why Airdate, Renewed, Axed, Returning, Bumped, Gone, Update are used.
Maybe it is time for a change? 🙂
To me “axed” is when they are cut off halfway through a season or not given a full season… like it has been executed.
When something as great as Revenge comes to an end it deserves a more respectful term to describe it’s demise … it will always be that it was “cancelled” to me! 🙂
But hey, it’s your site so I will shut up now. 🙂
It makes Searches much easier to be consistent, hence the keywords. Fairfax also using the same terminology today.
They actually did a lot wrong! That aside the better term would be “not renewed”. Axed implies everyone needs to be told not to turn up to the studio next week!
