Bert unlikely to host Logies one more time

"It’s a different show now. It’s got a different look and a different nature," Bert says of TV's big night.

TV legend Bert Newton, 76, is currently appearing in The Rocky Horror Show in Sydney, but rules out any chance of hosting the Logie Awards again.

“I think my time has been and gone,” he told News Corp.

“It’s a different show now. It’s got a different look and a different nature.”

Newton has hosted the Logies 19 times.

“I think that Karl Stefanovic would do a great job,” he said.

“I know Karl pretty well and I admire his work. I think he’d be terrific.”

He also nominates Simon Reeve from Million Dollar Minute.

“And of course you could never leave out Eddie McGuire because he’s the ultimate professional.”

In recent years Newton has still stolen the show as the presenter of the Gold Logie. We can only hope for more.

No host has been announced for 2015, with the night set to unroll with a parade of TV presenters instead.

  1. How about a multi-network approach, as they did a few years ago with Eddie, Andrew O’Keefe and Rove, with Adam Hills doing the stage exit interviews. It worked really well, and was a fun night for all.

  2. Simon Reeve would do a good job but I think the Logies is now so partially seen as a joke (or poised for a lambast) that this dimension wouldn’t suit him.

  3. I think he’s acting with wisdom here. There are limits to how long anyone (including Bert) can live up to a reputation that was forged decades ago. Yes, he steals the show when he makes brief appearances to present awards, but his style of Logies show is a relic from the 70s and 80s. The myth of Bert will always be stronger than the man, and the reality is that his only truly successful gig as a solo host was well away from prime time in the GMA days. Look no further than his rather tokenistic ‘hosting’ of the Logies in 2010 to see how he is utterly revered as an icon, but said icon represents television of yesteryear.
