Showtime and Fox 21 Television Studios have confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of Homeland will be set in, and shot on location, in Berlin – the first American series to ever shoot a full season in Germany.

It follows creator Alex Gansa signalling major changes during the PaleyFest in March.

“I think we’re going to do a big time jump — two, two-and-a-half years from where we ended season four,” he said. “The story will be set in Germany, in Berlin… We have our fingers crossed we’ll shoot in Berlin…[in that time Carrie will] be trying to come to terms with her life in the Central Intelligence Agency [and] dealing with what she felt at the very end of season four, which is disillusionment and disdain about it. So she’ll actually be out of the agency.”

The 12 episode fifth season of the CIA drama will indeed be set two years after season four, following Carrie’s ill-fated tenure as CIA station chief in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Struggling to reconcile her guilt and disillusionment with years of working on the front lines in the “war on terror,” Carrie finds herself in a self-imposed exile in Berlin, estranged from the CIA and working for a private security firm.

So far Clare Danes is the only confirmed returning cast member, but both F. Murray Abraham and Mandy Patinkin are also expected to return.

Production on season five is set to begin in early June.

  1. Well, I actually enjoyed S4 (except the last ep) so I’m cautiously optimistic about this, especially if Patinkin and Abraham are on board. I could take more of Rupert Friend, too.
