Comedian Peter Helliar reiterated his contribution to the social media Mercy campaign for the Bali 9 duo last night, telling The Project he was passionate about wanting to lend his support.

He was one of many participants who advocated the “I stand for Mercy” message in a longer clip with some making direct pleas to Tony Abbott to intervene.

Helliar said he chose not to mention the Prime Minister in what he described as a ‘Hail Mary’ plea.

“I guess … I do believe the government has done a fair bit — led by Julie Bishop,” he said.

“And we don’t know everything they’ve done. But I think, led by Julie Bishop, the government has done … so I don’t necessarily agree with everything …

An emotional Helliar joined the campaign at the request of actor Anthony Hayes, in the clip which also included ‘ordinary Aussies.’

“When it first came up, I thought about my three boys — and I didn’t want to jump on a video bandwagon,” he said.

“So I took my time but now I do believe these boys have rehabilitated themselves and I stand by what I said which is: I do stand for mercy.”

Julie Bishop also told The Project last night “I don’t think any government could have done more than this government has done in seeking to change the mind, the heart of the Indonesian president.

“If I thought there was anything further the government or the Prime Minister could do, we would do it.”

  1. The bipartisan efforts of Bishop and Plibersek to have the executions stayed has to be acknowledged. Playing the left-wing, right-wing game is pointless.

    1. And they were criticised during their tenure for ‘not doing enough’ to have the sentences commuted or pardoned. Remember that these guys were sentenced 9 years ago, nearly 2 years before Kevin 07.

As much as it pains me to say it, Abbott’s only fault was being the bunny left holding the wheel when the sentences were carried out.

(FWIW, I’m 100% against the death penalty, and I think it’s obvious that something really stinks about the way the AFP handled the whole thing. But, y’know, if you’re going to traffic heroin, then maybe best don’t do it from a country well known for executing drug traffickers?)

    2. No these lefty loons would have just blamed John Howard seeing he was PM when they were arrested. Cowell is pathetic talking about no balls as he has deactivated his twitter account because he couldn’t cop criticism of his message.

    3. bettestreep2008″I am betting Gillard and Rudd would have been criticised as well.”

The title of the video is “A Message for Prime Minister Tony Abbott”…..doubt the celebrities involved would have displayed their “compassion” against Gillard and /or Rudd

  2. I have to agree with you Tony, this was just a chance for some chance for people with high opinions of themselves to have a go at the govt. Think about this Pete, imagine your 3 boys with needles hanging out of there arms because these 2 dealers imported drugs into Australia. Think about them as ice addicts, i put drug dealing right up there with murder. The war on drugs is not a war its a whimper.

  3. Lets not kid ourselves, this video wasn’t about the two poor men who now have been killed by the Indonesians…..this was about criticising Tony Abbott. I doubt this video would have been filmed if Gillard or Rudd were PM

      1. You mean the contribution of Brendan Cowell who in the video urged Mr Abbott to show “some balls”……“Tony, if you have any courage and compassion get over to Indonesia and bring these two boys home. Show some balls,” he demanded.

Maybe Helliar and Co could have thought through what they said…..rather than just politicise the execution of these two men. As i said before, I doubt this video would have been filmed if Gillard or Rudd were PM

          1. I am sure Helliar would be grateful for you trying to put everything in the right context. I wish similar awareness could have been raised about the danger of drug abuse and danger of drug trafficking.

RIP to the two men. My condolences to their families, who are really the victims here.

          2. I am sure Helliar does not support the death penalty…..my comment was about the politicising of the deaths of two young men…..particularly after the title of the video is “A Message for Prime Minister Tony Abbott”…..
